Yes.
Some schools require you to have a permit before you start, others help you study to get it.
No permit, you don't get into a truck.Nick2001 Thanks this. -
No, if you have your permit than you don't need to relearn the CDL book again. You'd most likely begin learning that state's skill test out on the yard, go out learning how to shift the truck, and doing some driving out in the city/rural areas.

You just did the book smart part of getting your CDL license now you need to "train" the truck part to get the license.
That training should be D&H, PTI, Maneuvers and road driving to pass the license test but also thinking how the Co. wants their side done.
Say Elogs, paper work, etc.

I know there are supposed to be no stupid questions but I'm having trouble with this one.

Regarding CDL permits--and hoping this isn't considered a stupid question--I'd like to ask your advice regarding my own desire to earn a CDL.
I live in California right now and would like to move out of state, permanently. The problem is money is very tight, so it makes for a unique situation I'm not sure how to resolve. Can I seek my CDL training here in California, and then once I get my CDL permit move out of state to work, or would I have to move out of state first, then in my new state of residence get training and CDL permit there? I'm figuring it would be most affordable and easiest to earn my CDL permit in California, then move to another state to work from, and then get that state's CDL permit as that state's law requires. I hope I made sense there. Your advice is definitely welcome. Thanks! -

OK, officially, you need to reside in the state you hold a CDL from. You can skirt that rule maybe, if you're driving for 48 state carrier. But not if you're driving for a "local" truck company as in Intrastate.
