Go to college for what? Why would I spend 20k on college if I don't want to do it? I think this got a little derailed. Perhaps I could have formed my OP question a little better.

what kind of job opportunities are there for an 18 year old who has finished a credited CDL course?

will I be working as a yard jockey for a few years? Will I be driving a truck right away? What kind of companies tend to hire newbies?

i have continuously thought about what I want to do with my life after high school. I don't want to go through university of for the heck of it. I'll go if I have an interest in pursuing a career that requires it. It is a lot of money and I KNOW that I will not be going to any post-secondary unless I loan on finishing it. One of my siblings used up there RESP but decided not to finish the course and wasted a lot of money. I either go, or I don't. For now it looks like I want to be a trucker. If I decide I hate it, I quit and go to university with little repercussions.

Many companies won't hire until 23

you got a long way 5 years to go. Also there is no glory in being a yard jockey. You're putting too much emphasis into being a driver. Wait 5 years

    Op get on with ups..
They'll pay you to go to school for whatever.

If I was 18 that would be my career path even if I had to be a stupid package handler and wait a few years.

I wasn't poor enough to go to college.
(That's how it works nowadays right)

With all that time waiting you could get a good degree and a real job.

Farmers hire 18 year old punks all the time to run their grain to elevators and contracted process facilities intrastate. You CAN NOT cross state lines, but these cheap ### farmers love cheap, cheap, hard up, young meat in their seats. Knock yourself out.

Unless you are already working for a company and can ease into a yard jockey position it can and will happen. It's not very likely you will get a yard jockey position at age 18 off the street.

Believe it or not, Yard jockey isn't the lowest easy attainable job, It really is a skill-set to move upwards of 80 trailers in a 8-12 hour shift in all weather conditions and not holding up production and/or not screwing up inventory of trailers for future or present use.

Do you need your class 1 to drive a ups vehicle? Does your experience driving for them count when applying for trucking jobs?

Start as a sorter, bid into package car, bid into feeder, then retire.

UPS is a great top tier job. you are young enough to be molded the company way and become a lifer.

This is the best advice here. Work hard in school and go to college to get into a good career field. You can always take a three week course and get your CDL and drive for any of the bottom feeders for pennies.

I have read about farmers hiring young drivers. How do jobs like that work? Do you need your own insurance and more or less start a mini company and hire yourself out to drive there trucks? Or what?

i am really curious and again, I appreciate all of your input. One more question, how does going to a proper CDL school compare to just going through a company?
