i rarely start higher than 2nd i might start in 3rd empty or bobtail when i got to get moving in a hurry but most the time id rather start in a lower gear and skip shift it up.
-
If the truck seemed to complain, 3rd was too high (or you did it wrong). If not, it wasn't.
-
Forgot to mention im driving bob tails another thing is I start in 3rd and ride the clutch and gas at the same time
-
Oh well then just jump that baby right into high gear and go go go!!!
-
When bobtailing I start in 6th!...If I have an empty trailer I start in 3rd or 4th, never lower...I only use 2 when loaded(we're always heavy) and starting out, I don't even know if 1st will engage, I've never tried it...

A word of warning:
The more powerful your engine is, the gentler you have to be on the drivetrain. The lower gears produce less shock on the drivetrain. What you can get by on a 430 hp motor will grenade transmissions and differentials at 550 hp.Mike2633 Thanks this. -
I start in 2nd it's easier for me to shift up through the pattern that way. If I am on a hill then I start in 1st truck has plenty of power I don't roll backwards and we go up the hill nicely.
-
I always start out in 3rd, as stated before if the load is heavy or I need help going up a hill
