OK gang, brand new to the forum - I'll try and tread lightly here after reading through some of the great threads on this car hauler forum. I'm not a trucker, but as a younger guy drove a big old Ford fan with huge trailer all over the USA for trade shows and such. Point is I have enormous respect for the miles, hard work, and absolute crazy crap you all put up with. I posted this on 'The Truckers Forum' and one of the users recommended posting here, so here goes:

I bought a 1976 Ford pick-up, just like my grandpa had - and am having a hell of a time finding transportation. Yes, I'm a cheap ####### too. In hind sight (always crystal clear, right?) I should have researched the logistics better, but before I give up, fly to Bozeman and drive back to Boston - I thought I'd ask you all for some advice.

    Here's what I know:

    • Brokers all seem sleazy
    • No one will give me a firm cost
    • All want me to sign away my first born, my rights, and my checking account (such as it is)
Details are it's a regular old pick-up, 2wd, regular cab, no modifications, not loaded with anything, runs OK, and happens to be right next to I-90 in a car lot in Belgrade, MT. I am flexible over the next few weeks, and can unload at the Topsfield Fairgrounds (huge open lot, close to I-95 and Rte. 1 25 miles north of Boston). And pay cash. I'd also be happy to meet anywhere within a few hundred miles of Boston and as noted, have flexibility with timing.

I know it's winter, it's MT and I'm in Boston, and it's way out there, but my question is how likely is it to connect with a carrier that can do this reasonably given the latitude I have with timing and delivery location? I'd rather do a little extra leg work and find a driver shipper who wants the money, if s/he happened to be heading east from Spokane or Seattle and was seeing that the next couple of weeks winter should not be TOO bad along the route(s). Any suggestions would be very much appreciated. If it's much more than $1,200 - $1,300 it'll make sense to fly out ($170 ticket) and drive back ($2/ gal. gas helps). Am I nuts, or should I book the flight?

    2400 miles at 10mpgs x $2 a gallon = $480

Also, it's bitterly cold all the way home in a truck that you are not familiar with. Without tools nor spare parts. Rate should be about $.50 a mile.

Brokers are sleazy(generally/98%)). You did get that right! Your price isn't way off. Maybe tack on a tiny bit more since it is a pickup after all which is heavier and bigger than your average car. Good luck. That's a cool ole truck btw.

I think you should book the flight. That move is in the 1600 and up range. Bozeman???? Lots of luck finding a spot on a truck on that route.

Pretty much what I told on another site. Anyone who'll do that for $.50, you don't want hauling it.

You say you are a "cheap ######". That's all fine with your own stuff. It's the ones who think they can lowball a particular service and justify it by saying they are cheap. Be cheap with yourself, live on canned beans instead of steak, keep your own thermostat on 60, don't ask for full service at #### prices.

I would recommend Reindeer auto relocation. They are a broker but good at things like this. They have terminals all over and use people that run regular routs to move in steps along the way. I have 10 trucks that run to southern Cal from Montana. I move a decent amount for them that come out of Canada. Your truck would most likely go (by me) to Slc or Denver than Ohio or upstate New York than Boston.
Also I don't know why people are scared of Bozeman in the winter. I drop 50-80 units a month in Bozeman.
