Hello everyone, I have in earnest the past few days been trying to get my truck career started. I have reached several roadblocks along the way and finally it looks like a detour is available to reach my destination for a new career. My final hurdle in this course would be the Texas DL requirement. Currently I possess a squeaky clean FL DL.

I would like to know the following, how does one obtain a Texas DL legally with no friends or family in Texas? (please keep in mind I posted this exact post to reddit but after some thought realized it would get more visibility / straight forward answers here). Would anyone be willing to provide me with a temporary address (I have a feeling that is going to be what is required). Little bit about my self which can easily be verifiable is that I am a straight edge former Paramedic of 7 years. I even have a highly upvoted Paramedic AMA (on reddit obviously). Money is extremely tight but there absolutely would be some type of compensation for any help that can be provided whether that is before or after school starts would need to be discussed.

So please Truckers of Truckers Report (or reddit :p) any advice / guidance would be greatly appreciated, Lastly Swift has basically offered me the same acceptance / will hire with out the Texas DL. Due dilligiance has led me to believe this might not be in my best interest at this time but all options are on the table. Prime INC was my first choice but they do not seem to be willing to look past verifiable unemployment at this time. Millis if I remembering correctly stated unemployment would not be a problem. That being said the recruiter with FFE/KLLM has by far been the been the best to work with in terms of answering all my questions and helping me move along in this process.

Thank you all for your responses.

OK, so, you're asking if you need a Tx. D/L while being a Fl. resident and while working for a Tx. Based truck co. ? Or, to start school with a Tx. based truck co. ? If you're beginning to start your new career, you would get a Tx. D/L (using the school's address, or a motel) then get the CMV permit. After everything's done, you'll have a Tx. CDL, right ? Then, head for Fl. your home state switch it over to a Fl. CDL. These truck schools have students from every state attending their school. They know the procedure. Have fun.:smt024

The second one Allow Me. I would need to get the TX dl to attend the school in Texas. Yes, after it is done I would have a Texas CDL. I'm curious as to why they did not give me this option. They were indicating I needed friends / family to get the Texas DL. I will call them and be sure to update this!

Thank you guys for the replies! As promised here is the update. FFE/KLLM has not actually contacted me back about the unemployment verification and attempts to contact them just go to VM's. Stevens Transport has been sent my unemployment / employment history and has approved it with a class start date of Feb 23rd or earlier. I'm extremely excitied and a tad nervous as somethings were not really black and white as I would like but all people involved were friendly as a professional as they could of been. Right now my plan is to do some more research and prepare for my CDL both mentally and physically. Should other oppertunities arise I may take advantage of something truely worthwhile but I am a Loyal person and Stevens has opened the first door. With that said guys, what should I pack? Its going to be Winter in Colorado and I have never been there in my life. I have seen snow and blizzard conditions being in NJ thankfully. I need a weeks worth of clothes I'm just trying to figure out if I go Jeans or Dress pants. Jacket, gloves are a no brainer but what else might I be missing that is Mission critical not expected type deal? Thank you again!

Another option is to go to a UPS or Mail Boxes Inc store to get a mailbox. When you do that, you can use their storefront address as your address for purposes of getting a CDL. I know a lot of drivers that do this.

Why are you talking about Co. weather ? Does Stevens do their orientation there ? P.S. Work type pants are OK, you don't need dress pants.

Stevens has a partnership school in Colorado. Think that's where he's headed.
