Maybe these companies only have shortages because their rates are garbage. There's an issue in America the last few decades where employers literally refuse to pay employees a fair/higher wage.
There must be some level of driver shortage (I didn't believe it myself before) since practically every OTR company had significant rate increases this year. We don't need more drivers, we need to stop working for crap wages.
Fair to assume the driver shortage is real?

Wrong. I wouldn't be working for these employers if their rates were low. You don't want to measure 9 irons with me. You'll loose.Last edited: Jan 25, 2015

You talk big, but "good" to one is garbage for someone else. There's OTR guys making 30k thanking their employers in their daily prayers for all they provide. Also, people, generally don't have 3 employers when one or all of them pay well.HardlyWorkingNeverHome and jeff18 Thank this.

I guess it's hard to believe some people actually want to work. Thanks for proving my point.

I did no such thing, but I believe you're furthering mine by a providing such a poor attempt to dance around answering. I'm starting to think I must be right, you're probably doing 3 local jobs for 13 an hour each...
Also, this whole 1950s pride in hard work thing is of the past. For us drivers in regards to this philosophy, we need to worry about working smarter, not harder. Plenty of guys on here would ridicule me for running on recaps instead of driving 11 hours a day and resetting. They want MORE hours of service, instead of trying to fight for better compensation for a 70 hour work week. That's insane.UKJ Thanks this. -
I personally don't think a driver shortage exists..
There may be a shortage of individuals willing to tolerate the conditions and pay scale to put up w the BS this job requires..
But
Let them raise the pay and watch prospective drivers line up out the door. -
As was said by either me or some others. The so-called shortage exists at some companies not at all companies. One company either fires a driver, or a driver quits, thus that company is "short" a driver.
So that now, say the labor dept calls up for statistical reasons, and the company says it is "short" one maybe two drivers, the labor dept reports that to the feds that do the bean counting, and the bean counters therefore say there is a "shortage" of drivers.
OR an independent survey company calls and asks questions about drivers, and THEY are told the company is "short" one or two drivers. thusly, fabricating a "driver shortage".
How come no one seems to report a plumber shortage, a mechanic shortage, a bar tender shortage, a stripper shortage?
then the schools pick up on this so-called driver shortage, make big tv and radio and newspaper ads and tells you that you too can be rolling in the dough in 3 weeks or less at our school for the mere price of One MILLION DOLLARS!
BS, pure, plain and simple.

[h=2]Fair to assume the driver shortage is real?[/h]
i know what i have always been told what it means to assume.something about making an ### out of u and not me- -
That is fantastic! The median household income is $53,046 so that would be 79,569 per year. I'm a new driver living in sunny south Florida and it's great, but for that I would consider taking that job and farming some corn too. More importantly, I can't believe the jobs can't get filled and more incredibly that drivers left that job for a better one so close by. Time to start checking out Iowa and the Midwest more. The nicest people I ever met were from that area.
