the hammer trick don't work if the trailer itself is frozen. and that's usually not hard to figure out. a frozen trailer won't fill up with air like it normally does in the summer time. so if the trailer is filling up with air. i'd be more inclined to think frozen brakes and not air tanks.

cartridges still require periodic replacement.
BROKENSPROKET and dclerici1 Thank this. -
Yes it worked. The drain values were frozen too. See when I pushed in the trailer brake, I heard nothing. No air hissing from the trailer value, just silence. -
I remember one fellow who built a fire under his truck to thaw out the air lines, burnt up the truck, this happned in the river bottoms just west of Rockwell truck stop on I-30 east of Dallas.
Yes, building a fire is dangerous, but it will thaw the air lines out, sometimes it will thaw them out too much! -
Done it many times, yes it does workDoneYourWay Thanks this.

Hi BROKEN, I've done that too, ride the brakes lightly when running in snow, and it always worked for me, but I think they are talking frozen air tanks and valves. I always carried a small propane torch with me, even though, I think it is forbidden, but I didn't care. It got me out of many a jam.BROKENSPROKET and DoneYourWay Thank this.

try reverse to break em free....the brakes dont hold as well for backwards movement

Those small hand held cylinders are legal. I carry one. I had a small butane torch for sealing heat shrink & crimp butt connetors when I have to replace corroded pigtail connectors for lights, but it didn't work well when its windy. So I got a propane torch. We cannot carry the larger cylinders for gas grill, camper/RV or forklift, but we can carry those small hand held cylinders.
Next time my fifth wheel freezes and won't let my drop my trailer, its not gonna have a choice next time. I know I have to be careful to only warm the grease because it could burn.DoneYourWay, bobtrucks2204 and "semi" retired Thank this. -
I don't think this guy is pulling a trailer. His screen name is "6wheeler"?
