sucks the most? I am suppose to be doing long island and ct but latley they sent me to queens and The treets are very narrow, double parked cars no where to turn around and the directions dispatch gave me told me to do a u turn and not to worry about the 12'8 bridges because the signs are wrong. Ive been in the bronx a few times and seems like bronx is cake walk compared to queens. Never been to brooklyn statin island or manhattin. Not in a truck

First time I went to Mathattan, I was terrified(listened to to many horror stories). After going there a few times and knowing the best way to get back out of there it wasn't that bad. Anywhere up there things are narrow and tight. Many streets you drive on were narrow when it was just horse drawn wagons, and they are still the same width today. Backing off the street into docks made for 35' trailers and single axle trucks will test anyones skill and patience. I quit going into the city after 9/11 because of the hassle.

Prepare yourself and you should be OK...

In particular, I would encourage you to get a couple copies of the FREE "New York City Truck Route Map"
that's available in both printed copies
    and an online version.

"DOT publishes a full color, double-sidedmap featuring the City's comprehensive Truck Route network overlaid on top ofthe entire arterial street network, making it easier for drivers to locatespecific streets and intersections. The map also contains helpful informationon truck route signage, weight limits and dimensions,overweight/overdimensional permitting and truck related violations as well asCity, regional and state truck-related resources."

    FMI, see www.nyc.gov/trucks

Whenever I have to go down into that area, I like to use a combination of that NYC map, my Rand McNally atlas and my Rand McNally GPS... because remember,
the GPS is not right all the time!!!

Good luck with your NYC adventures.

The signs allow for 12" of snow......or so I was always told. My first trip across the Brooklyn Queens Expressway led to about 6-7 seconds of pure terror when I saw a 12'-8" sign. I almost went into full meltdown until a local driver recognized what I was doing and hit me up on the CB. My legs were shaking like crazy afterwards.:biggrin_25521:

Don't listen to these guys telling you a 12'8 bridge is always higher due to snow emergency here is what you do no matter wherever in ny you driving if you see a bridge says 12'8 nd it's a truck route go under you will be fine nd if you don't see the sign says truck route nd you are not sure don't go under, i have seen many guys get crewed up because they thought they were gonna make it. Always looking for a black white sign View attachment 78139 View attachment 78140

If I was a benevolent dictator.........I would outlaw all semi's into the city. :biggrin_2559: But seriously.........I have been tangled up in Boston/NYC more times than I could can remember. The local cops are great with helping you out, so don't be afraid to ask. Brooklyn was always my problem area....trying to hold off drivers while backing off the street into some 1920's dock.

I kept a simple mental routine when I had loads into/from the city. (good directions & slow down & and don't get flustered). I always tried to make it fun...........(kinda sorta). By time I got back across the bridges......I was always a little relieved, but I usually had some sort of unique experience to laugh about. It was always a adventure for me.

Just my 2 cents. NYC and the bourghs aren't that bad, just plan. I move a lot of OD loads in there MOST OF TEHM ARE LONG, TALL AND WIDE! Queens and Brooklyn can be tricky with some tight side streets, The main streets are made for tucks and deliveries. Best time to travel is after 9pm to about 4am, just make sure you have parking where your going. Contact the customer and do a google map search

New York State doesn't always have the black & white sign to supplement the the yellow one. Here is the link to NY State regulatory sign. It specifically says that bridges/overpasses/overheads will be marked as one foot lower than actual clearance. Section 2B.108 (NYR5-6 NYR5-7)
