Wait..... Why are you using a inverter to run a laptop??? Laptops generally have a 12 volt converter. God knows when I ran my gaming laptop I had a 12v cigarette plug that went straight to the laptop with out a inverter. Got it from Radio Shack for $13 at the time.

A standard laptop can use that, but not a gaming laptop. Even my Asus ROG needs 19.5v DC input. You're not going to get that from the accessory plug.

The problem is that you are using the "lighter socket", aka the "power outlet". You're not going to pull more than about 150W out of that socket on a good day. The losses are too high. If you try, you end up with things like a melted plug.

A much better choice is to run higher power items like this from the CB power binding posts.

Yup, even in the manual of my old inverter it was 150w plugged into the accessory, and 300w if directly wired to the batteries.

This is not your laptop's doing. This sounds more like a bad inverter and experienced a power surge. A good inverter would have a surge protector and would kill its self if one was detected. It sounds to me like your inverter was pushing more watts than your laptop charger was meant to handle, hince the whining and beeping. If there wasn't enough juice to powrr your laptop youd simply experience performance issues, including not enough juice to charge the battery.

Using a modified square wave inverter like the Cobra might kill your laptop's battery in the long run. A pure sine wave inverter would be better like Xantrex.

You dont need a pure sine wave for Laptops as the power brick on the laptops charger will take care of this. Pure sine inverters are good for things that receive a constant, uniform charge like a TV or a desktop computer or game console. TV's and household appliances can handle modified sine waves but with stuff like consoles or desktops where there are more sensitive components you would need a pure sine inverter. However, a battery backup can also be used in place of a pure sine inverter.
