Are we crazy? Need advice about going back to OTR and a good company

All good points on both sides.
Just remember that team running and truck driving can be hard and is not the greatest for your health either.
My body aches every day!

Today trucking and OTR is another world from when you teamed with hubby before.

I would rather retire and die with a fishing pole in my hand rather than a steering wheel!...
If it is the traveling you miss then buy a motor coach and tour the country when he retires!

And yes,I live and breath diesel fumes but one day I will be glad to set back and say I " used " to love trucking...

Not quite sure where I said that I was living a miserable existence. I happen to like my job that pays really well, has great benefits and a great pension plan. I grew up in a home where we lived paycheck to paycheck but I never really wanted for anything and it was only as an adult that I really understood what that meant. I have a job now that means I don't have to live that way and if that means I'm being "safe", then so be it.

My advice was just to make sure that potentially giving up a secure future in the golden years is worth it.

Well believe it or not, I have been off the road for 8 years after spending 14 years OTR. Just like your husband I've been running about 500 miles a day, 250 out and 250 back. When I started applying for OTR about 6 months ago I found my options were limited. Unfortunately a lot of insurance companies want to see recent OTR experience. I do have a few good options to choose from but I have been turned away by many.

With your husband spending 25 years at Averitt that may help but if they find out he was local(home every day) that might limit his opportunities. Good luck to you both.

 

These days , I see several companies increasing pay and offering bonuses up to $5000 to sign on. That tells me there is an increasing demand for drivers. This is probably a good time to get back on the road. I don't encourage people to buy a truck, but if you could get a truck, forward air could be a good option for teaming. Drop and hook and long loads for teams from what I hear. I would imagine there are many good opportunities for team drivers. I have seen adds about husbands being allowed to train a spouse. Good luck . I bet you could find a good opportunity. By the way, trucking is a dog eat dog world today. Much has changed from how it was years ago.

 

The road in exchange for a home? You need to have your head examined. You must be crazy....to give up the comforts of a warm bed, hot meals, space to walk around in for a 8 x 8 living space on 18 wheels....

If you are not crazy, then going OTR can offer more than a nice paycheck....

Sell everything you own, pack your bags and head on down the highway.....

Stop existing and start living again!

 

Don't get back on the road, it is like what others have said, not like it was years ago. If you really want to travel, either try and go along with your husband for a trip or two, and when he retires, take your kids inheritance and buy a motor home and travel as sight-seer's.

I don't understand why you guys can not team at averitt. He has 25 years with a great company why throw it away now? He has a very pension plan and insurance coverage. No reason to go to cdl school and than get hired on by averitt and get trained. If anything run single and be home for hometime at the same time.

 

why would he have to go through re training ?As a shuttle driver he would have been regional driver , plenty of miles , good money ....why would you even consider such a thing ?
