Got assigned a new to me company truck a couple weeks ago, 09 cascadia with a 60 series Detroit and I can't for the life of me figure out where this thing is happy pulling. I've been on a run of heavy loads but this thing doesn't seem to have any pull on hills no matter what RPM range I put it at. It has a 13 speed so I have options to get it to its happy place just can't seem to find where that is. Thanks for the help.
Detroit 60 series RPM range

This is an easy one! What you have is the bored out version of the 12.7 engine (14.0 liter, however the Pre-EGR 14.0 liter engine was a much better monster) that is hamstrung with all the emissions crap Detroit has hung off of it. HP ranges from 435 to 515 depending on engine serial number & ECM settiings. Torque is limited to 1650 ft. lbs period!! Depending on what trans & gearing you have, they can & will make a big difference in engine performance.. An O/O friend of mine has an '06 Columbia with the 14.0 Detroit, straight 10 spd & 3.42 gearing. Needless to say he was not impressed with the performance or fuel economy. So he found a cheap & easy EGR delete trick, swapped in a 13 over trans & stepped up to 3.55 gearing. He can now run his truck in his weekly dedicated Omaha to NJ, NJ to SC & SC back to Omaha run while getting 6.5 mpg or better and have the available power if/when he wants/needs it. If this is YOUR truck, I'd seriously consider taking steps to improve performance. f its a company truck, well.................

^ it's an easy one: you didn't answer the question....?
Coffey, CrashingTiger, Dave1837 and 5 others Thank this. -
It's not hard to feel it. Anything over 1400.
It's incremental though. 1000. 1200. 1400. 1600.
I habe a 2013 and it's not bad. Not great either. I can't wait for the new truck that's coming and rated for 505 instead of the 450 I got now. -
My 14L is not happy at all under 1200RPM. 14k to 15k is the sweet spot. After 17k the boost starts to cut out. It is also quite happy cruising at 16k.
Rideandrepair and Botoler1984 Thank this. -
He said it's a company truck, so he won't be doing "things" to it. Let us not forget about this http://www.thetruckersreport.com/tr...ion-modification-deletion-threads-please.html

From my experience 1600rpm is the sweet spot for a pull. Mine doesn't like to be below 1100rpm.
Rideandrepair Thanks this. -
My pre emission 12.7 likes to run at 1450-1500rpm pulling a loaded van trailer 75k-80k gross. I have a 13spd and 3.58 on 22.5lp tires. I cruise at 1450-1500rpm and when pulling grades and hills I wait for it to drop to 1400rpm and split down half a gear at a time and try and keep it in the 1600-1700rpm range. Does its best work running it like that.

my 14 liter pulls great at 1400 13spd 3.55 gears

I bought an ‘05 Columbia and it has the 14l engine in it. The guy I bought it from did the egr delete on it. Well before he sold it to me the ecm went out and he replaced it with a standard tuning and told me that he blocked off the egr. So when I got it it had the check engine light on but I got a good deal so I bought it. I recently had the ecm programmed to delete the egr. The truck runs well but doesn’t build boost until about 1400 RPM’s. So I changed the sensor and that didn’t help. It’s a 13 speed with 3:58 rear ends im it. This was my first load from Little Rock Arkansas to Amarillo Tx and I got 4.8 mpg. I’m empty now and in 13th gear going 70 mpg I’m at about 1150 rpm. And have to down shift to climb some hills. Is there anything that could prevent the boost from Building so late? Became se I want that 6-7 mpg. That the only way to mak a living is fuel savings.
Thanks for the help in advance.
