Here's a goofy one for you. I am presently temping with a P&D/LTL firm. I noted on two days worth of pre-trips for the same truck that the DEF level is low. The shop had no DEF so I bought some when I fueled yesterday. Today, I was told I am not allowed to fill the DEF tank. Okay, so if you're letting the DEF run down, how are you keeping the engine from derating? Surely that doesn't apply to just Freightliners.

We have bulk DEF at the shop, although the mechanics have to fill it(well, they are supposed to fill it so I don't bother to do it anymore).

We can purchase if needed with the EFS card. They'd rather we didn't because the shop gets it at lower cost.

    Just let it run out.
They will let you buy DEF from that day on. (or next day).

Maybe there is another way to get the company to fill the def tank, like a list in the shop or something. Good chance nobody is reading your pre trips. You might have to fill it yourself at the terminal.

That just sounds strange not being able to fill your own def tank.

I hardly see the maintenance shop more than once a month.

Might be because the repair bills for when someone crosses tanks between def and diesel added up too quickly...

Better off teaching the right way to do it over delegating responsibilities.

On any non-cdl truck i've used DEF is a blue cap, diesel is green, e85 is yellow not really easy to mix that up, how is it even possible to mix those up? Is the color scheme somehow different on a class 8?

In a large enough sample size, you will get some very unintelligent few. When these systems first came out , several trucks the DEF tank got filled with window washer fluid. ( on most cars its a blue cap under the hood). Many have been fill with diesel ( not sure how they got the handle in) . But stupid stuff happens.
