Maverick Student pay

I'm a maverick driver in their glass division. As a student in the glass division you will start off with 45c/mi plus a 2c/mi bonus for their "pay for performance" program. You'll get the 2 cents until you have a full quarter under your belt and then the bonus is whatever you earn. I've been between 5 and 6 cents/mile bonus since they started this, so with my time in the truck i was actually making 55c/mi plus tarping, any detention pay, etc. As a glass hauler you'll also haul flatbed stuff sometimes, though. It's slower in the winter, but it picks up as we get into spring. My first full year in (Jan-Dec) I made 61k, but I worked my butt off. If you want to do flatbed, it's like 38c/mi plus the 2c bonus. Miles/week look like 2000-2200 on average, but you will see up to 3800 on occasion (it's rare, but it does happen) and as little as 1100 (also rare...unless you leave out of the house late in the week).

Why do they start out so much more for hauling glass over regular flatbed?

 

Glass gets paid more because there's extra training involved. We haul everything flatbedders do and glass freight as well. It requires you to drive a little differently too. If the trailer flexes too much, glass will break. If you take a curve too hard, glass can break. It's not hard, it just takes a little getting used to.

 

Sounds like a good company. I wanted to apply until I realized they apparently only have automatic transmissions? I guess maybe for a smoother ride carrying all that glass.

 

Honestly, it's more about keeping their transmissions from being torn up by people learning. It's also helped reduce stress for new guys in stop and go traffic. For me, what I loved was that I didn't have the problem anymore of clutches hurting my knee.

 

I hate to admit, but it might a good reason for me as well. Laid a motorcycle down on my knee a year and half ago. Never been the same since. Actually a bit worried about what all the double clutching might do to it. The time where I can float the gears probably will not come quick enough. I'm going to keep these guys in mind for a bit longer.
