dismissal from orientation?

    ok, this is probably a dumb question, but here goes. Once you arrive at orientation, what are the grounds for getting dismissed/rejected? Besides obviously failing a drug test. Why would someone go that far only to be told to go home within days of arrival? IT does cost the company money to get you there, so why not do most of the required background information before hand? Or provide the student with more coaching (until they just won't learn with so many attempts)?

    Sometimes the information that the company has changes, or the company took a chance before all the data was collected. You lied on the application.

    I have seen a company, not related to trucking, hire 10 employees, after a time, keep the best and fire the rest. And do it over again. And again. And again.

    The same principal is most likely at play here. They bring in so many students, keep the ones they want and send the rest home. Maybe they don't want to provide more training or coaching to those that need it. Maybe they are looking for those that are 'naturals'.

    I don't know, but a third of the people in my orientation didn't make it to lunch the 1st day.

    Might be they lied about accidents? Failed some other form of background check? Found out what the pay actually was.

    Some actually were still fielding offers up to the last day of orientation.
    A guy I roomed with (USA Truck orientation) was on the phone with Prime every night.
    Last day? He hopped a bus to Prime's orientation.

    The two main causes for getting kicked out of orientation, are fail/refuse drug test, or fail background check. The next most likely reason is failure of DOT physical, or company physical agility test.

    Then you have folks that don't like what they hear in orientation, and realize they will not be a good match with that particular company.

    Many people never show up to orientation & Greyhounds cost less than a background check.

    Thanks for the clarification folks. I've been following a few posts about orientation, and noticed how some got sent home & was curious as to why the company would spend the money to bring i. The candidates. But I do understand how it can happen if one lies, or simply couldn't relearn.

    Adding on to Big Don's post. Then they give you a driving test. Fresh out of school, drive around the block test. If you can't do the gears or hit something, they send you home. It doesn't matter what school you went to, or what kind of truck you learned on. If you can't drive their truck around the block, they send you home. It actually feels like a slaughterhouse.

    One of the things I noticed about the new rookies that made the cut were completely unprepared to go to work. Listen up gang...if you are going to a bottom feeder orientation, be prepared to be away from the house for at least TWO MONTHS. That's orientation and riding in the trainers truck. You'd better have your mind set on being away and not being home. Do not be one of those people that show up to orientation, then have to go back home. You're hurting yourself. Get it over with....be done with orientation AND the training. Then and only then can you start making enough money to send to the house.
