    Hello everyone,

I am new to the forum and would appreciate any help that I can get. I have a small fleet of 5 trucks and want to purchase another truck. I have found some great Walmart trucks but the specs on the truck are not what I have been used to. All of my current trucks are 13 speed with 3.55 rears and 500hp Detroit 60 series engines. The trucks I am looking at now are 2010 PROSTARS and have 2.64 rears with ISX 400 engines and the tranny is 10 speed FR-15210B. I am based out of southern CA and haul reefer trailers from CA all the way to NJ. I would like to know how this set up would compare to my current trucks in regards to power and fuel economy. I am most concerned about the 2.64 rears as one of the mechanics is telling me its horrible for hauling all the way to NJ. Thank you for all your help.

Wrong choice! Let's start with the trans, shall we. 13 speeds and reefers are a thing of the past. I have a 13 liter cat with ten speed and have no problems on any hills and haul nothing but reefer. Next, you have picked a truck with many recalls and other problems, which is why your budget finds them a good deal, but steer clear of them and look to the Kenworth MX package!!

    chalupa Thanks this.

Thank you for the response!! But what do you think about the 2.64 rears? As I am used to 3.55. And the Kenworth is an amazing truck but way out of my price range and as I will not be driving myself but rather a have a driver.

Wally has it spec'd for fuel mileage. Some of his old binders had a 2:32 and a 2:04 in it. The package works OTR.

Like the man said, those Prostars are problems. I'd look elsewhere .

I agree, keep looking. I could be wrong, but Walmart probably spec'd those trucks like that because, I doubt they haul many heavy loads, mostly bulky stuff, and were going for mpg, like chalupa sez. 1st big hill with a heavy load, you'll be struggling. I say, go with the K Whopper. It's just the same old thing, pay now ( get a decent truck that fits your needs)or pay later ( rebuilding something you got a good deal on)

I drove a similar spec 2010 prostar on a regional run. Mostly throughout the Northeast. After one year and less than 100,000 miles the company took the truck off the road. The truck spent more time on the hook than on the road. Plagued with electrical, DPF and EGR problems. I'm not a owner operator, but if I was running my own business, Prostar wouldn't even be on my list of used trucks to consider. Good luck with whatever you purchase.

that 10 speed does not have an Overdrive ratio in 10th, which is why the 2.64 gears. it will tack very similar to your current trucks. Lots of big company tried the non OD with 2.64 gear in an attempt to gain fuel mileage...supposedly less load on trans equaled better mpg. it didnt work. thats no big deal your drivers wont know the difference.. but stay away from the worst im worst model years..2008 2009 2010 are bankruptcy waiting to happen for you.

Lots of 2010 PROSTARS for sale dirt cheap and the reason is problems with the MAXFORCE / POLUTION systems and too much down time

I know a guy who worked in the factory where those trucks were mfg. He said they were terrible. Sometimes, they would not even work coming right off the line (as in would not even make it to the parking area). As already stated, too much mechanical risk with those rigs, IMHO.
