Hey all,
New driver here. Just started driving with Sysco a couple months ago doing local delivery. Anyway with that I decided I should like others put a CB in my truck. I've gone ahead and installed the antennas on the already existing mirror mounts and plugged in/wired in power to my Cobra 29LTD.
I can hear people now with it on - but cannot seem to get out. The ANT light comes on every time I key up the Mic so I assume there's a problem somewhere.
So I have an antenna on both mirrors. They're black plastic coated mirrors.
This is pretty well the truck I have (mines in much rougher shape - LOL)
What I did EXACTLY was:
Screw the little double female thing onto mirror bracket, then screwed antenna into the other side of the double female thing, then just used the already existing wires.
Would love your opinions.

First, check to see if there is a short in the coax, take the coax end that connects to the back of the radio, with a multi meter check for continuty between the threaded ring and the center prong.there should be No continuty.if there is,there is a short somewhere.also check for the plastic spacer under the female stud. The stud is positive the rest of the mount is ground.
25(2)+2 Thanks this. -
There's supposed to be a spacer there? Right now there's nothing but all metal - I assume that would have some affect.
-
Yes,99 percent of the time there needs to be a plastic spacer. On rare ocations the factory antenna mounts already have the isolater built in into the mount.but if you know how to use a multi meter or have a cb shop tech check it for you to see if theres any shorts in the coax.a high swr reading on all channels will tell you theres a short.
-
If the mounts were already on the truck, their probably OK...If the coax was also already there too, there could be a problem with the connector or a bad place in the coax...Usually when the radios antenna warning light comes on, that's a indication of a dead short somewhere...The connector is where I would start looking, since guys sometimes have a tendency to yank on them...specially if it's not their truck.

I'll have to see if I can find a multimeter and check this thing. Where could you buy those plaster spacers? I'll have to see if I can find a CB shop somewhere around here.
-
Any truck stop whould have them, they come in a package with the female stud.could also check the antennas, ive seen firestick antennas cracked at the base.but checking for shorts is the best way to see if there is problem with the antenna system.

He said it in the OP. "What I did EXACTLY was:
Screw the little double female thing onto mirror bracket, then screwed antenna into the other side of the double female thing, then just used the already existing wires."
So either the nylon insulating washers are on the under side or he left them out. Resulting in antennas shorted to the truck ground. Soon to result in final blown in radio unless he mostly listens and talks little. -
Yeah it appears I can get out now but the SWR meter is WAY out of wack. So I think you guys might be right in saying that I have a ground issue.
