17 still isn't bad but I would have thought they paid more.

 

For me im to the point beggers can't be choosers.As long as it pays my bills id take it in a heart beat.

 

That's one of the places that only takes online aps.I tried filling out an app last Sat and had a heck of a time.I may try again if I don't hear back from Fed Ex.

 

It's a big difference in work environment though. Why drivers stay or have a hard time leaving. The high dollar companies like to crack the whip and run a tight ship. They have a attitude that your easily replaceable cause they got people waiting in line to get on. $17hr isn't great but the free healthcare can be a couple bucks an hour. Most companies you pay $75 a week $300 a month usually for a family, there you pay zero out your check and healthcare is top notch. A buddy was on his day off on a atv messed himself up bad had to get airlifted, paid 1500 out of pocket for likely a 15k bill.

 

I would clarify what I mean - that $17/hour isn't enough money to drive a tractor trailer where I live. The cost of living is high and local driving isn't easy here.
In other areas, $17 might be a reasonable salary (or not), so no offense to anyone who makes a good living on that wage elsewhere. But here the other freight companies start at $22 - $25, which makes me think that something might not be right at YRC and ABF because they want you to start casual at a low salary. Freight is extremely busy here, they should have no problem getting good rates and turning enough profit to pay their drivers a competitive rate. If they're not making money, something is wrong with their management and administration.
I could be wrong, some YRC drivers should weigh in on this, but my theory is that they have their core of experienced drivers who have been with the company for a while and make the top rate, but to fill new positions they're trying to bring in a bunch of noobs who don't know how much they should be making. We had an illiterate YRC driver hit our dock a week ago who left 2 pallets of extremely expensive machinery that was supposed to go to another customer, even after we asked him to double check his pallet count and paper work. He insisted it was ours, even though it was tagged for another business in another city even (our dock guy went into the warehouse for something, and the driver pulled off the stuff and left it and took off). We had to call the YRC terminal more than once to get them to come pick it up. They're lucky we're not shady or that stuff would have "disappeared." I felt bad for the customer wondering where the heck his machinery was after he probably paid an arm and a leg for shipping.

 

Yeah, I understand cost of living deal. Don't understand why there isn't a adjustment. A lot of drivers who've been with any LTL for awhile gets a custom to their ways. The ways over here is pretty laid back compared to most LTL's from what I read from others and my companies experience who's owned by YRC. Pension keeps drivers here. Plus seniority is a big deal. Starting all the way over at another LTL is scary especially for the drivers that went thru or saw what others went thru when the economy dropped out. If you had no seniority you were laid off or didn't work for weeks at a time. Some places it hit drivers that were 8-10yrs in the company. Didn't matter what ltl company you worked for Old D, UPSF, FedEx F etc you weren't working unless you had enough seniority. Healthcare keeps a lot of older drivers with health problems or families with health problems in this company. If they didn't have this deal with health care a lot of drivers would have left along time ago.
