Pro Tip: There are DMV offices in CA dedicated to CDL only service... the lines are much shorter, even on Mondays (when alllllll the new students are starting the process!) AND they can give the fine tuned assistance you'll need, since you have a CDL.... one time at a regular DMV the long time employee behind the counter didn't grasp that I COULD renew my CDL and not have a current medical card.... I just couldn't drive a cmv... since no med card. Call a truck driving school near your new home and ask were the nearest cmv DMV office is. IF you're anywhere near the Fontana/Onario area, it is right next to the National Orange Show Fairgrounds, in San Bernardino, CA... and yes, you can park your big truck, with trailer, on the property!

In Wisconsin, and maybe other states, I didn't have to show a Med card to renew my CDL. I chose a tier 4 classification, because I am "grandfathered in" (held a CDL since July 29, 1996, that hadn't been revoked). I can't cross state lines in a CMV, ( not that I want to anyway) but was able to renew my CDL without a med card. In the unlikely event that I do want to cross state lines in a CMV, all that's required is to obtain a med card, present it to the DMV, and change my tier status. Is it like that in other states?

Hey, I moved to California in March 2014 from New Jersey. I have my Class A with tanker, hazmat and motorcycle. You can transfer your CDL and other endorsements to Cali without taking the road test again. You have to take all the written tests over that you have taken in the past. (Including your regular car drivers license) If you plan in the future to get any additional endorsements get them the first time you apply for your new license in Cali or plan to retake every test over again. It's unlike any other state that I know of that you can't just add the endorsements on. Your license lasts for five birthdays before renew.

No long story short all you have to do is surrender a current valid cdl from another state to be issued a California cdl

Hello truckers! I currently have my CDL license in Massachusetts and want to move to San diego CA to escape the winter. I was wondering if I would have to retest the pre trip backing maneuvers and road trip with the state trooper all over again or will I be able to just transfer it doing the written test?

The only thing you should have to test on is paper..
