I just passed a DOT physical a month ago to get my "permit" and into driving school. Schneider sent me to another DR. for their physical and DOT card. He said he wouldn't sign off till I got a sleep study. He said I probably wouldn't have any problems but he sent me anyway.
My personal doctor wouldn't request it because I used the letters DOT when I talk to them. I finally called the sleep clinic and they said my insurance wouldn't cover it if they said it was DOT but would authorize the preliminary if they didn't use DOT.
Anyway they set me up for tonight. It took them 20 minutes. I ask about the cost without insurance and it was $550 for the preliminary and if I do need a CPAP it will be another $450. That is Delta Medical in Memphis.
    Good luck!

Well, here is the latest update...
Insurance still denied it, so I did the home study and prepaid selfpay (as if I had no insurance) that dropped the cost from $400 to $280. Plus the additional $100 to visit my family doctor to try and appease the insurance company after the first denial. This brings my total cost to $380.
I did the study at home and returned the equipment the next day.
I just heard back and there is 0% chance of sleep apnea.
I have a call into my company HR and the clinic DOT DOC to find out what to do from here. I WILL be pushing for a 2 year card as there are NO other issues to prevent him from giving it to me.
I will let you know what comes next.

for whatever may come from it, you really should inform your Rep and Senators about this.

Apnea is serious. For those that have it. the arbitrary nature of recommending someone for study who clearly didnt need it needs addressed.

Just heard back from the DOT DOC. I just need to drop off the report and they WILL issue a 2 year card. BTW, I am saving a copy of the sleep study report for my personal records for any problems in the future.

just for giggles send a letter to the Sec of Trans too laying all that happened and why its important to get this reigned in , with some real guidelines and standards that docs must follow. Really a perfect example.

I'm not sure how "serious" this is. It sounds like another hyped money maker for clinics and manufacturers. I got the results back on mine and they said I stopped breathing for at least 10 seconds 9 times in an hour while sleeping on my back. Normally I don't even sleep on my back but the bed they had me on was like sleeping on plywood. I had no problems when sleeping on my side. DUH! But I still have to get a $500 machine and now its on my med record. I'm convinced it is just the latest scam. Diabetes has about ran its course so they can't push it any more.
That is another story that bites my butt!! I had my first sugar levels tested in 1990 and it was ok. In 200o I was checked again. Same sugar levels but I was "pre-diabetic". In 2010 I was tested again. Same sugar levels but now I am diabetic because they lowered the "acceptable" levels!! DUH!!

umm, it IS serious. increase in risk for HBP. Increase in risk for heart attack. weight gain.micro sleeps while driving, oxygen deprivation to the brain.

Didnt I see you in the SNI forum about coming aboard? SNI covers all this. their dime. loaner machine til ins kicks in. Thas for company drivers. while soem methods for referral are arbitrary once its established you need this therapy, its covered. In total.
