And you would rather spend tens of thousands just so you don't have to send the government a few thousand dollars. I would rather pay 3k in taxes than 10k in interest.

Yep we rebuild our trucks. We have an old Autocar that is now a Kenworth.... LOL Head on fixed that one so we had to put a hew cab and hood on it. Truck is on it's third engine and this last week we just went through a complete walking beam rebuild. All new bushings in everything. Up until a few years ago we had a 1951 Autocar wrecker in operation. It is still operational but the buyer turned it into a show truck. We still have an 80's vintage Autocar wrecker we use.

Every one of our trucks are paid for and get rebuilt when needed. We even have 3 projects in the works to add to the fleet. These are all trucks that have been wrecked in one way or another. And guess what? We do not owe a dime on any of them.

    Our fleet consists of ....

    12 heavy haul trucks
    2 heavy wreckers
    1 medium wrecker
    1 roll back wrecker
    4 pilot car trucks

Saying it is for tax savings is like saying you need a mortgage on your house. So you get to write off the 10k in interest that you pay a year in order to avoid paying 3k in taxes. That puts you 7k in the hole. If you did not have that "tax savings" you would put 7k more in your pocket every year.

In the last year I can count on 1/2 a hand how many times our trucks had to be towed back to the shop and one time was driver error (hit a rock while pulling a belly dump and cracked the oil pan).

So yeah, I say rebuild it. We know what we have and the trucks always make it back to the shop.

Rule of thumb for transmissions is 2 times the engine life. You can get a rebuilt 18 speed for $4700 then you have to add labor. Rebuilt rear ends will run about 5000 a piece on the high side including installation. Even with all that its still cheaper than a new truck but you know nothing about.

Thank you Drivers,I appreciate your opinions!
So far most of the replies are for rebuild however like mc8541ss said it is not just the engine...most of you guys with way more experience than me know what i am talking about. There is always something to do on the older trucks, you might not spend a penny for a month or two then something goes wrong and put you down for a week or so.
Friends of mine own the brand new volvos two of them with I shift and the other with 13speed.The payments are between $2300-2900 before the Insurance.I've argued with them many times about the brand new vs used one and we Have never met in the middle. In theyre opinions when you calculate all the maintenance and repairs and down time for five years it's equal even more on the payment for a brand new truck! There is no way i should know this because i never had any major repairs and problem with my truck and i've been truck driver for 4years,2.6 as a owner operator!
At the other hand they are right too,I think it's all about how much are you willing to work and be gone from the family!
So it is really complicated and relatively decision!

And you don't need to go there since you, like many others on here are smart enough to realize it's a "scam."
