I am 3,000 miles in after a Cat platinum overhaul on my Cat C15 in an 03 Kenworth. It has great power, better fuel milage for sure, but it is taking in oil. I checked for leakes but couldn't find anything. I am hoping it just needs to be broken in? Any thoughts, comments?

A new motor will use some oil for a bit before everything settles down. Very common for new cars to do this so I don't see why this would be any different. It sounds like a good motor if the power and fuel economy are where they're supposed to be. Proof is in the pudding as they say.

You need to tell us how much oil is being used. Are the stacks wet? Are there big droplets on the trailer?

It takes a while to seat the rings to the liners depending on what rings and liners were installed during the overhaul. . It should be finished lapping in around the 3-5 thousand mile mark........maybe a bit longer in cold weather. Keep the heat right to it. Cardboard off the grill if you need to.

from mine.. common to use 1-3 gal in less than 4-5 grand. don't idle, don't use cruise or stay at one speed for long. load heavy, wind out the r.p.m.s. in each gear. do not progressive shift. some say change after the first 500 miles, than the first 5,000 then on to normal service.

The cat place where they did overhaul obviously put in new oil after the overhaul. It is down to the bottom of the dip stick, where anyone normal would a gallon or two.
It has been super cold but I never use cardboard on the grill.
There are no droplets on the trailer and the stacks are not wet. Which leads me to believe everything is good and it just needs to take what it needs til it is broken in.
It rides strong uphills but when I need to downshift I do so, mainly in fear that I don't want anything to blow up or have a breakdown.
Someone mentioned not to baby it, I run it at 60-64 on cruise control and stop about every 100-150 or so miles to give it a break, however I don't shut it down. And after a day off before I go get a new load I let it sit for about 45-60 minutes for it to "warm up".

That being said can I relax a little? Does it sound like I am doing everything right?

Hi kw600, I had my 5ek overhauled recently, actually out of frame do to a broken crank. It just had a 6 hole overhaul done about 200,000 miles ago then the crank let go. I had them replace the hole where the crank broke just to be sure the crank didn't damage the rod when it let go. Had them roll in new bearings, oil cooler and turbo. I had them put in delo 10w-30 and I am probably at 5,000 miles and have added 3 gals so far. No oil leaks visible and nothing out the blow by tube. It is cold up here also and don't try to idle to much but we do work the crap out of it when it has a load behind it. I was getting kinda concerned also with the oil consumption so maybe this is normal?

kw600 sounds like you are baby'in that motor. Drive it like you stole it. Like some of these guys say vary the speeds and get it hot. Work it hard and run those rpms up more than your usual. Just for a couple of weeks. Mine has used 1-2 gallons of oil between 12,500 oci's ever since a platinum inframe 150,000 miles ago. Some mechanics on here have said they should burn none but all the people I talk to that say theirs does I find that hard to believe. If all else is normal I don't think it's a big deal to be burning a little oil.
