hey everyone. new to the forum and signed up to get some insight on my plans to see if i am realistic or not.
first a little about me. 28 years old and soon to be army vet. i will be getting out in may. i plan to relax home for a month or two while im on terminal leave. but right now trying to figure out my future. i have always loved trucks, and for along time wanted to drive. just never did. as i get closer to my ETS date im trying to figure out what im doing and trucking came across my mind. never been one for school, but may end up going but wanted some info.
if i ended up trucking, my game plan was this. i live right outside philly, so was looking into smith and solomon for school. a buddy went thru their program and liked it. so if anyone has experience with them would love to hear it.
after that i was planning on being endorsed for hazmat and all to try and bumped my earning potential. as far as companies, was looking at schneider, tmc, maverick, CRST. I do have to do more research on companies, so any input or additional companies good for new drivers would be appreciated.
now this is my big plan. i would like to drive for 5 years or so and after getting a good feel for the industry and how everything works, i would like to venture into owner operator. either lease to own program or buying one, that is my goal. then save some money and buy another truck and have someone run that and try to continue to build. obviously this is just a drawing board....so any input in appreciated. last would like to get my own authority and have a small fleet. not looking to be a millionaire or anything, just a comfortable income while others drive. if this kinda time frame is doable is really my question....or if i should reconsider. and i am single, so have no problem running hard often.
any input would be appreciated to all above. thanks in advance

My advice would be to enroll in the school and have it knocked out during your terminal leave. Take a week or two off for a breather...then roll into class. Have your endorsements knocked out before you graduate.
Edit: Don't get me wrong...I enjoyed my terminal leave (spent that time mountain biking, getting ready for college, and drinking with friends), but try to at least do something productive during part of it (I just ****** off for 45 days, lol.).
I think having some kind of structure (having the class to go to) would help your transition to civilian life. Speaking from experience...it's quite an adjustment and can suck a bit if you literally have nothing useful to do during that time. Good luck. -
My advice: Stay in and retire. If you think that you are putting up with some BS now.........just wait until you get out here. Just a different animal with the same ole smell. You will be young enough after you retire to try trucking if you still want to.

I know it's hard to believe that anything could have more B/S than service, but that's only because you don't have any experience in trucking. If you're not in combat arms and you're not putting your life on the line everyday and you don't hate it so much that you can't sleep at night ... I would definitely consider staying in. If the reverse is true, then you've certainly paid your dues and it's time to come on out and try living your dream. Just be prepared to be a little disillusioned with the way things are out here. In any event, thank you so much for your service and stay chilly!!
