Crete Carrier Corporation - Lincoln, Ne.

I'm actively looking at a few Carrier's and Crete is one of them. From what I've read so far their not a bad company, but want some more info. about them. DeadManWalking, do you know anything about company orientation, training/trainer time on road, bonus(es), slip seating, pay rate, do they allow passengers, trucks/employee's safety standards, option for O-T-R/Regional runs, vaction time, etc. ( Yes, I went to their website...not too much info. though. Any answers to my questions will be helpful and thank you.) Sorry for so many questions, but I want to work for a company who cares about their drivers and takes safety seriously. I've been with Crete since 6/05. Couldn't be more happy, getting 28-3500 mi a week. Hardly any N.E. (thank god)

 

Crete has a good rep on the streets and have heard very little negative about them...Keep in mind they are cut from the same cloth as Werner....

 

Yea I was with that clown company-werner for 6.5 yrs. I was an idiot. Things are looking up now.

 

I am on medical leave from Shaffer Trucking which is a division of Crete Carriers. I have been there 6 years and I have had a few minor problems but nothing noteworthy to complain about. I like the miles and the pay rate. In 6 years my pay rate went up 9.5cpm. I have never had that kind of pay jump for any of the other companies I have worked for. No complaints from this driver

 

I'm new to the industry myself and have taken some advice from this forum and checked Crete out and I'm glad I have. It's nice to finally run across a company that for the most part haven't had too many negative comments thrown their way.

I do have a question about Crete but it can apply to other truck companies as well. I'm currently living in one state but at a point to where I can go and live wherever the truck company needs me to go. If you don't have a permananet address for example and you at some point schedule down time (what others would call going home for time off) where would you take your truck? To one of the company terminals? If so, would you just leave the truck at that particular terminal and then pick it up after your days off? Would you take the truck with you?

 

1971, I worked for Crete for almost a year and I liked them a lot. That's a good company. One reason it IS a good company is because it's still family owned. There are no shares of CCC being traded on NASDAQ, as far as I know. That makes a HUGE difference when it comes to companies. Publicly-held companies are usually bad news, as the stockholders always clamor for dividends above all other concerns, including the concerns of those companies' drivers.

What you do with a truck when you shut down for a few day's vacation depends on:

1. How close you live to your company's terminal. If you live close, the company will ask you to leave the truck at the terminal lot in most cases. That's fine. You just hop in your car that you've left on the lot and head home, or you get someone to come fetch you at the terminal. You leave your rig at the lot. Lock it up and it'll be fine. Nobody will bother it if the terminal is fenced (and most are) and/or is watched by guards.

2. Where your first run will be picked up after you come back from your break. If your next run is to be picked up near your home, some companies will allow you to take your truck ahead to a truckstop close to your house and leave it there while on break. When you go back out after a few days, you'll just go to the truck stop and get the truck without going back to the terminal.

3. Availability of secure parking. Some companies will allow you to take your truck AND trailer home if you have a secure area when on break. I'm sure different companies have different definitions of "secure".

4. Whether or not you'll be slip-seating. Some companies have slip-seating arrangements. This means when you pull into a terminal to go on break, you'll clean your truck out before going home. When you return, you'll pick up another rig.

5. How close you live to an "artery". If you live along one of the big highways and near a truckstop, you'll probably be able to leave your truck at the TS and go home. Guys who fit this category usually live farther away from their terminals, so their companies run them by their digs when they need/want a break. Unfortunately, these guys are also more than likely under a load, so they can't hang out at the house too long.

 

I was wondering if Crete has any solo runs out west. I'm considering moving out to Denver and would like to be able to look into working for Crete but using Denver as my home base...
