    Hi everyone,

I heard those DOT guys in ME are giving tickets for not having a "this truck makes wide turns" sign on the back of your trailer now..

    Can anyone corroborate this?

Sounds like bullspit to me. They'd have to show me the law that says I'm supposed to have those stickers/signs.

I've never heard of that either, although it's not inconceivable. People will try and fix stupidity through legislation.

I don't see any thing in the state of Maines statutes on turning and signals that say this would be an offense. The statue is 2071.Among other things,it states"An operator may not turn a vehicle or move right or left on a public way unless the movement can be made with reasonable safety".Hand signals are still legal but only when the traffic behind you can see your arm extending from the vehicle.A turn signal, working of course,is all you need.A label stating that you make wide turns is only a courtesy to the public. If you ever get pulled over for something like this, take your ticket to court, and recite statute number 2071.

I'd say this is right up the "Connecticut will right you up for not having white sheets..." alley. Always seemed to happen to a friend of a friend of a friend...

Don't know how but one of our drivers got one,the officer asked if his trailer was a 53 or 48 and he told him it's 53 and he got a ticket for not having that sign on the trailer

I'd take that to court myself; never heard of such a thing. I think the cops sometimes think we're dumb????

I know over the summer the Maine DOT was cracking down on the "this truck makes wide turns" deal. I had heard that Prime was getting some flack about it. Maine DOT made the claim that because Prime was using mudflaps with the wording on them, that they could be lost and replaced with a plain mudflap.

Maine has got to be the worst there is, I know the stories about Ohio, PA, and some of the others, the state contracts with towing companies, if the truck your driving has a brake out of adjustment, it goes on the "hook", even if you can adjust it your self. Any minor violation it gets towed. Now I am not trying to imply that having a brake out of adjustment is minor, quite the opposite, but if a driver is qualified to work on his or her equipment then that driver should be allowed to.

As a driver for Prime, I can attest that on every dispatch to Maine we get an additional message that reminds us to check our trailers and make sure we have that sign, with a suggestion to pick one up at a Truck stop or even make one ourselves and duct tape it to the trailer. It states that numerous drivers have been ticketed recently.

When we go to certain areas we get messages like these for problem areas like Idaho permits.. fuel tax paperwork and reminders to stay off particular roads in Oregon... 53 ft restrictions in CT, VT etc

Since we dont get messages for 90 percent of the rest of the US, I assume that these particular issues come up alot in these areas.

You gotta be kidding me? :biggrin_2554:That's about the stupidest thing I have ever heard. What moron doesn't know that a tractor trailer makes wide turns?

WOW! I can't believe the crap you truckers have to put up with. :biggrin_25510::biggrin_2551:That just sounds like common sense to me, something Mainers usually pride themselves on having.
