All hours working (trucking industry or not) count against your hours of service. Could that be some of the problem?

I took a flatbed load to the port in Charleston and the security guard said,"It's going to be a long wait but if you donate $20.00 to my favorite charity, I'll jump you to the head of the line." I said, "Do I get a receipt for the $20.00?". She said ,"No receipts." I said,"OK then I'll just wait." About 10 minutes later I was through the gate to get unloaded.

I guess "other job" hours could be an issue except, they never called to ask about them. I kinda think they've just decided that part-timers aren't worth the trouble.

Well that's pretty disappointing. As if the roadability issues and union indifference weren't bad enough, attempted extortion rears it's ugly head. Too bad you didn't catch that on tape.

This company www.carpentersmotor.com is close to me and is always looking for part-time drivers to haul mail. Maybe they could tell you who to call to find out who to call in your area.

Yeah, good luck. I was in a similar situation a few years ago, I grew up driving trucks, farm equipment, you name it, in the family business before cdl's were issued in Vermont, and 20 years later, that means absolutely nothing. Even after biting the bullet and going to cdl school locally, doing very well, and getting good recommendations, the only local place I could get to give me a chance was to haul milk. I knocked on plenty of doors, but they all blamed the insurance companies. As it turned out, that milk hauling outfit was shut down less than a year later for repeated dot violations. Needless to say, hauling milk takes a special breed all by itself, and I didn't last a day. I ended up driving a city bus for three years before my back couldn't take it anymore, now I'm looking at surgery in another month or so. Unfortunately, not on worker's comp or anything like that, it's been getting worse for years and nothing to do with the job.

Unless you're hellbent on just driving a truck, you might try driving a bus part-time, they are always looking for part-time help.

From the Carpenters website, I got the idea to check with Beam Bros. They haul mail closer to home but, again, little part-time work and they prefer 2 years experience.

Not exactly hellbent, but no interest in driving a bus, either.

China, Do staffing agencies require you to sign a contract requiring a driver to stay with them for a certain amount of time?

You can try some of your LTL companies. A lot of times they have on call or casual positions. Your freight haulers like Dayton, road way, ones like that. Not many companies will hire someone with your restrictions. I don't agree with the other poster that your time working at the other job would have to be logged as on duty not driving. I don't know what your other job is, but if it's not a safety sensitive job or driving job then you should be alright. Anyways, for what your talking about wanting your best bet is to try a LTL company. You might have to work your way up to a driving job, ie, work on the dock loading till you get enough senority to drive, but that will at least get your foot in the door. Hope this helps.
