Hello house, i am a 39 year old truck driver living and working in Nigeria and will like to come over to canada and search for a job.I have driven heavy duty trucks in Nigeria and other west African countries for 15 years .I have contacted many companies(Bison,Big Freight etc) but most companies replied that they will contact me while one told me the immigration process is cumbersome.I am now thinking of getting a tourist visa ,fly into canada and see if any company might give me an opportunity .I know there is an element of risk in my plans but i think that is the only way a company may give me a try.I intend to stay a maximum 3 or 4 weeks in canada before going to Nigeria and will be glad to get advice from this forum on other ways which i can go about the job search

Hiring someone on a visitor visa is illegal, and no company will hire you.

That's asking for trouble. Temporary Foreign Worker Program is what you should look into. But be warned you will be a slave to the company who hires you.

Not to mention your licence is not valid here, you would have to get it all over again.

These companies are not lieing to you with truck driving being classed as unskilled labour. There are changes in immigration policy that is going to make it more difficult for employers to bring in Temporary Foreign workers. In some provinces there is no path to citizenship so after 4 years you will be returned to county of origin under the new rules.

I intend leaving canada before my visa expires and just thought of talking to some trucking firms to see if anything can be worked out .I know the implications of overstaying a visitor visa so that definitely is not in my plans. As for the TFW i really dont have a clue how the whole stuff works , thats reason why .i thought of talking to any company that hires immigrant truckers during my holiday .

There's nothing illegal, to the best of my knowledge, about talking to anyone while on holiday. If employment comes up in the conversation, so be it. Now that said, Google TFW Canada, and have some current background knowledge about it when talking to someone.

By the way, it's cold here, and the roads are in about the same shape as there !

companies that are looking over seas are doing so because they treat their people like trash and there for no one will work for them except a poor sucker like your self. Both of the companies that you listed are on hard times for exactly that. And be warned big freight : no fridge no inverter and 58mph company speed and you have to set up your own truck services. Grab yourself a bob sled and check out Arnonld Brothers Transport while your at it.

With all this being said i wish you the best of luck. the industry is better then it is in the USA but its still a rough life.

To come over here on a tourist visa seems like a waste as you still have to return to your country and STILL have to work out the details. Much of this can be worked out via the phone or email. seems like a whole lot of $$ to spend. Not to mention if the folks at CBSA find out what your actuly up to they wont be to happy. Sure its not a crime to talk with them but your over here with all the intent to solicit your self and lied on your tourist visa application. Now what do you think will happen when you apply for working visa?

Heres a little help for you to get done what you need done. contact Agritel Transport, then H&R Transport. Both of these "carriers" are heavy into the LMO programs. Agrtiel is openly advertising LMO APROVED on their adds and web site. but they are at the bottom of any "good" drivers list as we dont work cheap or free.

    Skilled operators aint cheap
    cheap operators aint skilled.

    Good luck.

i want to mention that i didn't mean "poor sucker like you" in a bad way. simply some one trying to make a better life for themselves or their family so not knowing sign on with a carrier that would take them, but behind the curtain the devil is counting the money they plan to make off of you instead of paying good hard working canadain drivers what they deserve or just treating them with an ounce of respect that would make the world of difference but then here we are...
