Which States require to carry tire chains?

You would be pretty stupid to not carry chains in the winter. Montana does not have a chain carry law but they do have a chain up law and if you get caught driving without chains in a chains required area then you may be parked for a while. Other states are the same.

Don't need them in the south?????? Tell that to the guardrail ping pong players in Dallas.... LOL

 

After 24 hours waiting in a rest area or chain up area, in Colorado the state patrol can have you towed. Also there are winter storms in Colorado that are bad enough that you may have to chain in order to proceed to a safe haven even out on the plains.

You don't say where you're from... driving anywhere in the west without chains in the winter is foolish. Your life may depend on having them... if not from the weather, then from the hundreds of drivers you hold up because you were too stupid to not have a set. A month ago, we had to wait for 20 minutes in a truck stop parking lot in Evanston WY for a guy to chain up just so he could get into a parking spot. I've seen times in states even in the Midwest and east when drivers couldn't get out of loading docks without chains.

 

Oregon requires you to carry them also.

 

I know they're required to be carried through WA and OR. Idk if they're required but you'd be foolish not to have a set on you driving through ID, MT or Colorado.

 

colorado is statewide. enforcement is strictest on the 70. california will stop you if you don't have them and the weather is starting to kick in. over donners.
utah will stop you if parleys summit is bad.

there's been times when i've had to chain one tire just to get in or out of a truckstop. anywhere in the country. i also pack salt, but salt only works to a certain temp.

 

Carry them in all states and you've got yourself covered..
