Thanks for the reference! The concept of "Personal Conveyance" has been discussed here many times before, and seemed somewhat mythical because nobody could ever give reference to any actual recognition of the concept by FMCSA.

 

The company I'm with allows up to 10 miles a day PC. Most of us use it sparingly as we don't want to lose the privilege. Drop the trailer, go do laundry, or grocery shopping without messing up a break.

 

I think this "personal conveyance" thing is a fiasco. Companies are all over the place with it. My company has just cut us back to one hour or 50 miles. We have elogs.
you can start off in "off duty driving" mode but the QComm will automatically switch to "on duty" driving. Bingo, you're on the clock, even if you're not under a load.
We have complained but to no avail.
before we had approx 5 hrs of PC but they pulled this out of the hat. Their excuse is for safety reasons.
Safety?? Safety from what, by whom. What a load of &@$#**!! Probably scared of lawsuits or whatever they've dreamed up.
Ok so there are some parameters to adhere to, but I guess eventually when those chuckleheads
at the FMCSA mandate elogs for everyone, they will come out with some half baked measure.
They may even eliminate personal conveyance altogether.

Superior limits it to 1 hour (drive time) a day, and only if you are away from your home terminal, and only to get food or lodging. I think it is fair because it's hard to imagine where I could be that I would need to drive 30+ miles to get to the nearest food or hotel. I suppose out west it might not be enough, but mostly we run East of the Mississippi. I do like having the option, many times its nice to have the option to get real food versus truck stop slop.

 

Only time that I will use off duty driving is while on break, bobtailing from shipper or receiver to a truckstop or store. Use to work for a company that wanted me to drive 5 hrs. with an MT from a receiver back to their terminal while off duty driving-DIDN'T DO IT. I'd rather stay at truckstop and break in order to have adequate hrs. to drive. I always make the company conform to me, not the other way around.

As I am a company driver, I do consider it a privelage. Most companies won't allow a driver to use a truck for personal conveyance at all. And the FMCSA allows P.C. they don't require it. If I actually owned this truck, of course I'd see it differently.
