Distracted drivers think they have a handle on it

I'd back you up on this - except that he's right

 

driving is a privlege that is taken for granted by most of the public. Having been first on the scene in more than my share of accidents,I can say for certain that inattention,or distraction plays the major role with just plain stupidity taking up the slack. When you see those crosses and memorials on the side of the highway,it should be a reminder of the need to pay attention to what your doing,and not try to multitask while your on the road.
CN. is the only state where I've seen signs banning hand held devices while driving, but there may be more. There could be a safety campaign to raise public awareness,and if there were laws on the books that banned all hand held devices while driving at least it would be a beginning.
In the past year and a half of OTR driving I've seen so many stupid mistakes and close calls all over this country,that I think the percentage of good/safe drivers is way lower that the study you quoted.
