And when he tells you your monthly wage it will seem low at first so keep in mind that room and board are paid for. You don't have to worry about any meals at all.

That's good to know. I saw that a lot of the listing had said housing and meals were provided on there.

Also don't forget furniture stores, lumber yards, and feed mills delivering local loads. This may be way out but check out the military, reserves or national guard as a driver....

Man, I've wanted to do that bad, but they won't let me in with my health the way it is. I've applied to a few furniture stores, but no response yet.

So having little knowledge of the Ag Transportation business, what information should I expect to get from this guy tomorrow? I want to make sure I don't get myself in pickle employment-wise.

My guess would be you'd prob start in April helping get stuff ready. Where he starts working the harvest will determine when the cutting starts. Most big custom crews have set customers that they've cut for for years so the stops will be planned out for the most part. If your next stop won't be ready and you have extra time they might stop in between and pick up some work. Them it depends on how far north they go. Then you haul everything back south and prob get into cutting fall crops in TX I'd guess. Once you leave plan on being gone at least all summer. More than likely you won't have time to go home, or a vehicle to get there. It's a blast though. I went on a crew the summer between my junior and senior years of high school. You get to travel and see the country and if you don't have an Ag background you will learn a lot of info that could help you with your trucking career. You'll be around machinery and also learn things that will help if you end up running hopper trailers.

That does sound like loads of fun! The call tomorrow will be interesting. Do you remember what they paid you when you worked harvest? I'm sure it's changed since.

It was the summer of 1995 and I got $800 a month plus room and board. Lol. Let me do some quick checking to see what the ballpark is now

I only saw one that listed a starting wage of $3000 a month plus room and board. Most guys will offer an end of the year bonus to try and get people to stay on all year so make sure and ask about that. And don't be afraid to call people out of state either because most will start in TX.

farmforum.net and hpjclassifieds.com both have help wanted ads.
