Another thing to remember on harvest is you can go and hardly spend any money if you don't want to. Water, snacks and a few bucks on laundry is the only money you have to spend. When I went I'd buy cases of water and snacks at Wal Mart.
It's a great way to gain experience and see the country. Lots of short hauls from the field to elevators get you shifting like a pro in no time.
I went with a smaller crew. We had two combines, two semis, tractor and grain cart, one straight truck and two pickups. We stayed in motels. I can honestly say it was one of the best things I've ever done.

What year or years were you out there and where. I worked for a guy in Kansas in 1985.

That was my next question. Gonna ask how big the group was. That's awesome man!
I got a question from my mother for you guys (Moms...): Are there very many women that get hired for harvest? -
Thanks, I'll check those out for sure!
-
There are women on harvest both driving truck and running equipment. Most I've seen are family of the owner be it a daughter or married into it.

I did it a little backwards I did it in 2010 when I was 38. I've farmed most of my life and always wanted to go on harvest. Lost my job in '08 and decided to head out on harvest to see what its like. If I would have done it in my earlier years I bet if still be out there.
I worked for a guy out of WY. We ran from OK to MT. When we were done in MT everyone else went home and I went back to WY with the boss to harvest and do custom plowing. -
I figured that.

Growing up on the farm and going on wheat harvest is where my experience started as well. Pulling hopper bottom most of the time doubles up north and hauling combines and tractors. If you go on harvest and pay attention you'll come out lightyears ahead of anyone coming out of some school. And if you can do it on harvest then OTR will be a flippin breeze
USCHI.com is the custom harvesters website.
I went on harvest fresh outta high school and it was by far the best thing I could have donetexasbbqbest and SMTatham Thank this. -
That's great! I'll check out that website as well. -
Well, I've sent several emails in response to "Help Wanted" ads and I've gotten a few phone calls/emails back today.
There is a outfit in North Dakota that I talked to for a while today. It's a whole family business (I think most are). Said they'd probably start Mid-May in Vernon, TX. I filled out an official application with them after I talked to the guy and should hear back in a couple weeks if I get the job or not.
It was very interesting to find out how they operate out of a couple big campers and how they transport all their equipment around. They seem like a great operation.
I also talked to a guy from Pennsylvania today (this was the call I was telling you guys about yesterday). He was looking for people to work for him too. Didn't get much info from him though. He's supposed to call me back this week with more info. Not sure if I want his work or not. Guess I'll know more next week.
Also talked to some folks out of Colby, Kansas. Seems like they run a tight ship there. Still waiting for more info on that one too.
All in all, I think if I can get a job with a harvest crew, it would be a great experience for me.MJ1657 Thanks this.
