70 is a terrible score. It means that out of 100 companies, 69 have a lower score, and 30 have a higher score... it is a ranking system. Me personally, I would much rather work for a company with a much lower ranking.

True but at the same time each individual driver is responsible for their actions and for driving responsibly and lawfully. The unsafe driving violations were the following in descending order: 6-10 miles over posted speed; Failure to obey traffic control device; Lane Restriction violation; Speeding 11-14 miles per hour over the speed limit; Failing to use seat belt while operating CMV; Improper lane change; Speeding 15 or more miles per hour over the speed limit; Speeding work/construction zone; Using a hand-held mobile telephone while operating a CMV.

After these they were in single digits for total number of violations. I could look at these and think that if I wanted to be a safe driver and manage my time well, I wouldn't need to commit these violations. I also wouldn't want the points or pay out of my pocket which would negate the reasons for doing them in the first place.

I guess since I've never had a ticket or accident and have extensive military (12 yrs) and civilian driving/work experiences I'm looking at this differently. These are all preventable and as professional drivers they should know that at the end of each day safety and pride in your work ethics and company should prevail.

Just my thoughts on the big picture. It seems that I would have a more prosperous career as long as I'm safe and productive.

That is a company I would avoid like the plague... major violations are speeding, probably means dispatch is pushing the drivers to make unrealistic appointments.

Yes each driver is responsible, but when a driver says no, many companies punish that driver, either with no loads, or loads that are impossible to do, so that they can terminate him for service failures. And with a company score of 70, you are on the radar to be inspected, to be watched for speeding... I would look else where.

Besides 70 is above the intervention threshold.

That's fine James but get the bigger picture.......yes the driver is responsible for his actions but why is he doing this? We are not a bunch of lunatics just hammering and running hot just because we want too........either dispatch is pushing or threatening impossible dead lines and / or the wages are so low this how you have to run like this just to draw a decent check..........or both.

And the higher score draws more attention from the law, so you spend more time in the scales / on the side of the road....so you have to run harder to make up and meet the appointments / and so you get stopped more often......The dog is chasing his tail and that's typical of trucking......it's a no win for the driver so why play??

    Good luck

A quick look at CSA data can give a skewed picture of the carrier. Go further when reviewing the data. Some carriers have a quick spike in numbers and go back down, others remain high. Click on the carrier history link, you can review the data all the way back to late 2010. If a carrier has been in intervention for several months, or even years in the BASIC's you've listed, the drivers action are likely strongly influenced by the carrier. If a carrier shows significant improvement, or has only a 1 or 2 month spike, they might be a carrier you'd like to work for.

This is from my company's. Don't now if it will show right format or not. Score is actually messed up a little due to the local delivery trucks in GA, NC and AL. Since they are registered in Florida we have to run the out of state trucks on our DOT number. And the drivers of those trucks are not as big on inspecting them. They have our unsafe driving all the way up at 26. Highest it has ever been. We are a small fleet though just over 100 trucks. Only maybe 40 of which are tractor trailers.

CSA scores can be interpreted two ways:

HOS: Is the company pushing drivers or are a lot of the tickets for "Form and Manner", "Duty Status Not Current"
Maintainance: Is the company not fixing what is brought to their attention or are drivers not inspecting the equipment and just running it?
Unsafe driving: Is the driver being pushed or just not using their head?

in the case of one particular flat bedding company, there are loads are delivered based on 50 miles an hour and they encourage you to drive slower to save fuel, hence the 4-6 six cents per mile performance increase. In regards to speeding I think if you set your cruise control everyone wins. Those are just my thoughts on it.
