When I had to drive late: loud music, caffeine, and cold air. Run the A/C. The heater will make you want to sleep.

Besides the obvious of getting enough sleep? I drive at night regularly, and the best thing that's worked for me is to get on the phone (always with a headset...safety first!) with one of my coworkers, and talk as long as you need to. Rolling the window down, turning on the dome light, a vigorous back scratch with my back scratcher, plucking nose hairs.

Cold air makes me want to sleep. So when I get the need to use air to keep me awake, its hot air...but if I get that bad to need air or loud music I pull over.
