Veteran apprenticeship programs

Schneider uses private CDL school.
Celadon has their own CDL school & provides lodging and 3 meals a day.
Couple of Army vets posted recently they went with Celadon and like it there.
Both posted they are with the refrigerated division. Celadon also has flatbed division.

 

I did the apprenticeship program through Schneider. In reality it's a borderline scam but not against you. Literally you do everything a non veteran would but you fill out the paperwork and Schneider does the rest. You get about 1100 extra a month. That's it, literally nothing else involved. I guess the V.A looks at it like OJT training but I just looked at it like extra money. The only reason I was even able to do it was because I took 7 months off and had to do a refresher for Schneider which classified me as a student.

You can get reimbursement for school and the G.I money on top of that. Schneider might even pay for your school up front. A member on here called Firespock did that. P.M him for details. He is now getting ready to buy his own truck and doing just fine with what I hear.

Again, it's weird that this would count but don't look this gift horse in the mouth, just do it. It pays for a year and the money does get less after I think 6 months or so bit it only drops to like 800 or something I can't remember its been a while. I would recommend Schneider Bulk if you are looking to get into trucking. I had a great experience there and moved on to one of the top tanker companies. You can do the same.

 

I spoke to a school that was very proud of the fact that they were "Yellow Ribbon" certified. Apparently, it's a Veteran's program but I'm not at all familiar with it so I can't comment. Sorry.

 

Look into Troops2Transport for your CDL. I just hit my 21yrs and dropping my retirement so I be out in about 20 months. Get your CDL with them using your GI Bill. Then there are a lot of Companies that have Apprentice Programs. Melton, TMC, KEIM TS, Maverick, ROEHL, just to name a few. Some have 12 months but some have 24 months. If you do that should be 18K-25K of free chicken and have two years under your belt. This is my plan I am working on.

I ask everyone who wants to waste their GI Bill on trucking driving why?

the GI bill is worth atleast 50K, why waste it on 1100/month which will probably get wasted on crap anyway. Save it and give it to your kids if thats the case...

 

Every situation different. I have BA my wife has BA and we cant have kids. I will retire with 23yrs from the Army and do not plan on getting a masters and want to gets something out of my GI Bill so this is a way to get some money back.

last recall I was aware of was in 1991 for Desert Storm, (that was fun), were you recalled than? if so how long have you been out? is your GI Bill still good?
Army College Fund was only good for 10 years, not sure about GI Bill.

 

I don't know the exact circumstances but I knew of several people who were out and got recalled, maybe Inactive Reserve, I don't know. Didn't care at the time. This was in 03.
