Hook in rub tail through the rail, through the winch, then pull the tail till its a little less the half the slack then roll. Your all the way through for a tight bight and your tail is halfed. Works fine for me. I strap alot of very small things and i have waaaaay to much quite often.
Edit: i use the fold over and tuck under strap with 2 inch but not 4
4" strap / winch....excess strap

My tip to OP is don't worry about speed. Safety, load and equipment is top of the worry list.
I've been loving my short straps. I finally sewed a bunch of wore out straps I was saving. Basically If I have a hook and enough good strap over 12' long I can re-sew the hook end. I used V69 poly thread. Tighten the crap out of them and stitches are solid as factory ones.
I write the length on the end of each so I know which loads it will work on before I unroll it.
I have a 23', 19' and 17' so far. -
After the DIY stitching........are you equipped to test and recertify the WLL of the strap??

I have a bunch of short straps also, love them. I don't sew, I just cut.

Thanks guys....I guess I'll keep doing it my way. I don't want to lose anything and if that's the best way I'll just work on being more efficient.

That's also called "short strapping", get caught with that in Washington state and it's a ticket for an unsecured load for each one they find that way.

i use 20ft straps and its pretty easy, but then again witht he freight we hual it wors great -
Could you imagine the piles of stuff we would need to be "Legal" in the lower 48 and the Canadian provinces. I half strap always have and always will.

There are a lot of times that I do not pull the straps all the way through. Just takes too long but when I do this I also make sure I get 3 full turns on the winch so it will not come undone at all. Never have had a problem with this.
Now for the extra, that will depend on how much there is. Some times I make a big loop and tuck it under the strap as I tighten and other times there is just no way to secure to my liking so I put a bungee through the center and place the rolled up excess behind the strap and hook both ends to the rub rail. I have never had to stop for a flapping strap except for the time the strap broke.
