Nice! I might have to do a little research about this.
That's why I'm here, Information!!!!!
I dont think I'd be taking it to a Cat shop. Just need it fixed to get it home.
I'm looking at rebuilding it myself when I can.

A bearing roll-in is preventative maintainance. Once a bearing fails enough to knock, it's too late! You aren't going to fix a damaged crankshaft with a new bearing.
You do not want to drive any engine that has a bad bearing knock. You need a low bed.
Someone mentioned broken rocker arm. Yes this happens. Also split injector tip. BOTH sound MUCH worse than they are with a knock and a skip.
When a rocker arm breaks, it makes the engine pop back through the intake. Sounds terrible, but easy fix.
The injector makes a heavy fuel knock with tons of smoke. -
The 3406E my old mans driving had a knock in it, we put new bearings in it and it now has close to a million on the very same crank after the bearing job. I agree with you though, but you cant really see what your dealing with untill you look at the journals, some are fine some get scored. Thats why i said i would not even try to drive it.

Im going to have some engine work done on my 3406E local shop not CAT, 2WS0 serial code on my 99 Pete. 550hpW900L you seem very knowledgeable regarding FLS and injector trim codes. Can you help me out with optimal settings for my motor # 550HP. CAT installed their new ECU settings when I had my rack done with them about a year ago. Bad mistake horrible MPG and power!

That will happen, first thing i would do is set the injector trim codes to 5232, good for 50-60hp. I wouldnt mess with the FLS or the FTS codes untill you can, or want to put a bigger turbo on it. My FLS is set to 127, which is the most you can do on the ecm and my FTS is set to 0. FLS mean full load setting and tells the injector how and when to fire etc, meaning more power. If you were to set the FLS to 127, FTS to say around 0 and injector trim codes to 5232 your 550 will now be close to 750hp, on top of that you can get a fuel temp wire thats good for another 50-60hp. With a set up like this you wont complain about power and you will be amazed at the fuel millage. You can also get a boost sensor wire to give you response like a mechanical motor, it dont give no power but the response is unreal. If you can have the shop plug into the ecm and get me the flash file number, FLS, FTS, and injector trim codes i can compare it to some numbers i got and get back to you.
With all this done most 550s with a pitts box on it wont be able to touch you. -
Thanks alot
I already purchased the fuel temp harness and the turbo boost harness. I do feel a difference in performance with these additions not to mention .4 increased MPG. Cannot wait to reprogram the ECU.
Thanks -
Do the trim codes for now, i wouldnt mess with the FLS with a stock turbo, i did it and turned the exhaust housing blue after a week, it wont flow enough air. You can get away with it but you wont be able to use all the power, with the pyro pegging 1200*F within seconds lol.
If you want to upgrade i suggest the michigan turbo stage 3 or stage 5, i would go for the stage 5. It is 2500$ but worth it in the long run. If you do end up doing this get you a 3406B exhaust manifold, its a cheap and WELL WORTH upgrade, will gain power and the exhaust temps will stay way down. -
I'll change the trim codes and leave the FLS alone. If I set the FTS to 0, will my Pyro temps jump to 1200F? My understaning full load settings should be changed only turbo upgrade.
-
Just change the trim codes for now, dont mess with the FTS. Your pyro readings wont change, unless you do. If this shop cant get the CAT passwords to get in to your ecm they wont be able to touch the FLS or FTS, only the trim codes. They can check what FLS and FTS setting is in it though, if you can get those let me know what they are, just curious what CAT sets them to with their "great new programs". Hold off on the FTS and FLS till you can get a turbo, there is a cheaper alternative to the stage 5 if you dont plan on any more that 750-800hp, ill get ya the part number.
With the trim codes, fuel, boost wires you should have a strong running 550, the thing should do 550-570hp to the tires, meaning around 650hp at the engine.
EDIT: Borg-Warner part # 198123 turbo, its non wastegated will handle 800hp without any issues. Its of a machine engine at 600hp stock, dont know if CAT carries it but you can call any turbo rebuild shop and they should be able to get it. If anything maybe CAT can cross refrence the number with a CAT part number. You can also go with a cummins turbo but i dont like them do to the small exhaust housing, this gives quick spool abut lacks top end and also causes high exhaust temps.Last edited: May 31, 2008
