I picked up a hydraulic test station for John Deer transmissions that was as awkward with protruding sections and parts as could be. The main piece was 10 ft high on one side and 4 ft on the low side,.. 25 ft in over all length. Then had a control panel on the front that was 4x8x4. Took my wife and I the better part of 4 hours to get tarped with out shredding my tarps while going down the road.

Paid very good and worth every penny. I had a feeling it was going to be a PITA before I saw it.

    .

Then when you least expect it.

Repaired this tarp and used it for another year. Finally retired it last Tues. Going to use it for spare parts to repair my new tarps.

This was a locomotive engine from GE. Picked up in PA,.. ran out to the UP yard in Denver. Roughly 10'2 in height. Tried my best to protect my tarp,.. obviously not well enough.

We haul 80-90 % steel so I only carry steel tarps. We make an extra $40 for throwing tarps and only adds an extra 20-30 min. Not worth it for us to haul the extra tarps around but have on occasion borrowed a couple from some of the other drivers to pick up a really we'll paying load that needed 8 foot tarps. If the price is right we will make it happen!

I carry 2 steel tarps and 2 lumber tarps. No flap on the steel tarps. Lumber tarps are 26 ft in length and usually 2 will cover most any load. The steel tarps are only 24ft and been a few times where I had to break out 3 tarps.

Laugh,.. but I used to lay out the full tarps when I first started tarping. Had an old hand show me how to roll up the excess and strap it down. Work smarter,.. not harder.

I've got a few more reasons to never pull RGN or DD now. This is about as bad as it gets for me.

I do actually like loads like this and helping on machinery moves and things, I just seldom find loads like this at all, let alone ones that pay what it's worth.

I got this exact wonderful load the other day. I've only been out of training and solo for six weeks so I suck at tarping almost anything, let alone this monster. It takes them forever to put these loads on your trailer with that crane, and by the time they got done with mine it was dark out. And it was raining. And I had zero clue how the hell I was going to tarp the front and the back. I was up on top of that load walking on a single wet beam of steel to roll the tarps out. I pondered the meaning of life and made peace with God.

A driver from my company was there at the same time I was. He got a nice perfectedly squared load of all the same size tubing. It took them less than an hour to load him and then it took him less than an hour to strap and tarp. I wanted to punch him in the face.

I'm getting old! I can't believe how hard I worked when I was younger. About the only time I throw tarps now is for a load home.

    Heck yeah!!

If people only understood the amount of time and effort it takes to 'properly' tarp loads like these.

    Respect. :biggrin_25514:
