Smith & Solomon : Anyone have any experience with this school?

    im a graduate, pretty good school and even after 4 years of leaving I still get job postings every month

    I am about to test this comi ng Saturday in Cherry hill, I attend the Belmawr campus, small yard but they teach well and alot of companies will pre-hire because th ey have a good rep! I have 4 pre hires already!

    I didn't attend that school, but have some information to help you.
    What type trucking do you want? There are dozens of companies to choose from and many you may not hear about in school. Pre-hires are OK except thay are only for an invitation to orientation; you still must pass orientation to be hired. The pre-hire is no gaurantee of employment.
    Get all the endorsements plus TWIC and passport; this gives you many more job opportunities to make good money such as with Superior Carriers or Schneider Bulk and a few more tanker outfits.

    I would like to go OTR for a while to get experience, then maybe regional. Depends on how OTR works I may do that for a while.

    Yes... There are lots of companies. I picked up a few Trucking mags from a stop to see what's out there..and it's kinda overwhelming. I'm trying to learn which points I should look for, and what "gimmicks" are used...

    I've read on other posts about not focusing on how much per mile a company pays, but the other factors like shipper delays, empty van, layover, etc., and if the company pays for those things.

    I attended Smith and Soloman in Lakewood NJ
    was fine
    all these schools really only teach you enough to get your license
    your real training starts with your first co

    i was a recruiter for TransAm and went to all of Smith and Soloman schools
    all pretty much the same

    I wouldnt recommend TransAm as a first company as they push lease onto new drivers before they are ready
    to me right now the best company on the east coast for great training is Abilene
    they have a thread on here you can ask questions

    they have the longest training but adequate pay during it
    2 of their trainers are on their thread daily
    one lives in PA so location isn't a problem

    Another thing is to ignore "experience required" and apply anyway. Many companies bend their own hiring rules. You mentioned "gimmick" and the big one is cents-per-mile. Read the fine print and some of those big cents-per-mile include fuel bonus, on-time delivery, etc. Nothing wrong with that as long as you understand it. I only made .36 cpm, but at the end of the year made $65K due to accessorial pays.
