Mike I've been here 2 years. Let me ask you a question? What makes you consider Tyson foods? What do you know so I know how much too type.
MickTrucker Thanks this. -
Thanks for the response. But I'm considering them because the starting pay is pretty good at .39 cpm, the benefits are pretty good. They told me I can drive 3000miles a week. Those were the most important to me. I know they have automatic trucks, which im not a fan of but I'll deal with it for .39 starting out. I don't like how long the training is or the pay but again it's something I'd deal with.
Speaking of training, is there a way to finish training faster than 8 weeks? what's the number of hours needed to complete training? How were the trainers? Lastly, I've been growing my hair out for last month, month & half anticipating a hair test with whatever company I choose. If the company I choose does hair testing, I'd have to wait a few more weeks for my hair to be appropriate length, so does Tyson do hair or urine? Either is fine, I asked the recruiter but she said she didn't know for sure and I don't want to show up for orientation just to get sent back because my hair isn't long enough. -
they urine test you. Not sure on training. 3,000 miles weeks are not that common anymore more like 2800. Due to the fact our trucks are downed down to 64 MPH now.. Before we was running 3200-3400 miles a week. Last year i made 65 or 68k here. This year its not looking that good. 4years driving exp and only making 42cents a mile...

I like thier chicken

Been here 4 years, they turned trucks to 64. Some driver are still at 70 because they won't go to a yard. Pay is decent, be on time and you dispatcher will always give u good runs.
MickTrucker Thanks this. -
I better call them, I've been there 4 years and I'm at .44

(NOTE: This is all my opinion)
About the orientation, what it consist of?
A: They will get you transportation to Springdale, AR where you will take your physical, very easy road test (around the block) and be told how great they are. No frills, they feed you breakfast at the motel and lunch. You will get paid $400 for the training and if you are new, you will be paid $400 per week for 8 weeks which is really long! Soak in everything and listen to your driver-trainer.
As well as the Dot physical and drug test, what it consist of?
They send you for a full blown psych test, military like agility test, get your 40 time and want to know how quick you can run the mile. If you don't drop over from a heart attack then you will be accepted.
LOL!!! I am KIDDING!!! Oh geez, I wish I could have seen the look on your face. Seriously, they don't do any sleep apnea, they do have you do a *cough* test which is a joke because they don't want to do that anymore than you want to. They do a drug screen which if you are not a user then its no big deal. If you are, then clean your self up, nobody wants to drive out here with someone who still thinks they are in high school. If you have your CDL then man up and be a professional! Its as easy as any place you will get a physical at.
They have now started to again try and improve things. However, it has been pretty bad at Tyson. A lot of drivers were leaving due to the pay not meeting the industry standard (.52¢ per mile) and them turning the trucks down to 64MPH. That's important because I use to be able to make up time and now I cannot. I use to be able to run 770 miles in 11 hours and now its difficult to hit 600-650 miles in 11 hours which does result in a loss of pay if you stretch it out over a few weeks and think in 3 weeks you could lose 100 miles per day x 21 days = 2100 miles in 3 weeks! Yea right?!!! Because they turned trucks down, they are now giving the longer runs to outside carriers and sometimes I am lucky to get 2500 miles in a week. Every now and then I may hit the mystical 3000 mile mark, but seldom. You are forced dispatch. Your dispatcher IS your boss, and sometimes we are talking early 20's know it all kids STILL in college who think they know more than you.
Back to the loads, they will give you what they call combo's. These are VERY heavy units on skids filled full of parts. They will slide all over the place so you have to drive very carefully. I always weigh ASAP when I am under those loads because the weight will go from your tandems to your drives. I have had several weight tickets but they pay because when I scaled it via CAT scale, it was legal.
they also give you short runs (and a lot) as in anywhere from 10 miles to 300 miles. Now, these will pay from .03¢ to .06¢ more per mile but where you get screwed is if its not a drop and hook and of course, you still have your pre and post trip to do. Again, the longer runs are now going to outside carriers because they have contracts with them and don't have a real choice. I have spoken with a couple of different people with these carriers who claim to have left Tyson because the outside carriers paid more.
While looking for something else, I have yet to leave here because the bottom line is, many companies will promise you EVERYTHING then leave you disappointed. Tyson is NOT a trucking company so always remember that. They are in the business of making money and you are nothing any more important than the swine and the bovine they slaughter. Most other companies are the same way. The good is they are OK with you taking home time every other week, but the dispatchers will guilt you about not staying out more. Then when I was staying out 4, 5, 6 weeks they would not get me back in time for my home time. More than once they would run me near home for the entire time, then when I was close to getitng home they would send me 1000 miles away. They claimed it was not on purpose and seem to have addressed this issue.
If you are looking for someplace for great benefits this could be the place for you. If you don't mind being gone for 3, 4, 5 weeks regularly, then I may recommend driving for Hirschbach motorline.Last edited: Jul 11, 2015
