Wow that's quite complicated for someone that doesn't know their way around computers. Luckily I know enough to be dangerous, but for others they aren't going to have a clue what they're supposed to do. So if I dock it like I normally do for the update, it has a higher risk of bricking the device?

I wholeheartedly agree with you. Most people these days are used to plug and play electronics but the TND's just don't work that way. I don't know if this is due to poor programming or software. It seems that connecting and disconnecting improperly can throw a wrench into the system very easily and the user guide and instruction booklet don't cover any of that very well. I believe that is why this thread is so very long and I also think that there should be a mention of this thread in the user guide for people that are having problems instead of just the official RM web site.
I think the powers to be just assume everyone that buys one of these units is computer literate.

I had no problems with all the other updates with random wireless networks and the RM dock. I have used hotspot wi-fi all over
the country to update my Mac and Windows machines. Never a problem with data.

Surprisingly, this update seems to be very sensitive to almost everything. My 720 was killed by the the new maps and OS update.
I still have not had time to have Mark reconfigure my entire computing system to make it work ...

absurd ..... the more I think about it, the closer I am to throwing the #### thing in the trash can

    Mark, 2 questions:

1, Does Rand Mcnally or 3rd parties sell new screens? Just need to get the plastic cover replaced on an older 710. Otherwise I'll have to see what I can make up.

#2, What is the maximum capacity for the Micro SD card on the 710? I want to update the maps again and it says to have at least an 8G. I want to get a larger size for future updates.

Either turning it off/on, or resuming a trip once I've reached a via (usually a truck/rest stop).

It isn't that the machine doesn't know which way I'm going, its that it recalculates legs I haven't even started (multi-stop trips).

Example that should show you what I mean:

Origin: Jahant truckstop in Acampo, CA
Pickup: Sierra Army Depot, C Street, Herlong, CA
    Destination: Fort Jackson, SC

After stomping my feet, turning in circles 3 times, and sacrificing a salamander, I was able to get it to route how I wanted (i80 to Lincoln, NE then down to Kansas City, then Nashville, then to Columbia SC -- 2640 loaded miles).

Then I stop for fuel at the Sac Valley truck stop (not in poi db: 2891 stockton blvd, sacramento). When I resume my trip, it is now showing a total trip length of 60 extra miles (it is now routing down to i40 instead of 80 and I haven't even got to the pickup yet).

I get to the pickup and start back towards i80, only this time it is routing using a portion of i70 and is adding 100 miles.

I ignore it and continue on 80, but it doesn't return to my original routing until I'm in Nebraska.

i80 westbound through Chicago area. One interchange in particular is in Lansing, IL begining at where i80 goes over burnham ave. If you're going west on i80, it'll have you exit to that feeder road then after you pass i94 it'll have you merge back onto 80.

The RM mca says it is good, but now that you mention it the RM might have had an overweight warning. Both Goethals and Verrazano-narrows are rated for trucks...
I don't think there is an easy fix for this one. You need to take some toll roads to get to Long Island in a reasonable manner, its just the RM gives no weight to whether a particular toll road is worth its price.

It isn't a truck speed limit issue. The speed limit for everyone could be 80mph, but if your truck is governed at 62 it doesn't save you any time to take a longer route when the speed limits on the shorter route are already higher than you can fully utilize.

I got a 16 gig Kingston, no problems.

    Future updates for the 720.
Not sure if there has been a decision made on whether or not they will release another one for the 720.
My guess will be there won't be anymore.

I'm buying a new one next year if I keep driving.

OK....I wanted to wait for a while until I posted again since last time I was coming off as an #####. I have several issues with the TND Tablet that I still want to have addressed. 1) Even though the DST issue was resolved, the auto brightness still needs to be fixed. Yes, I have the auto brightness offset timer adjusted, but it still changes too soon. Seems that this approach will only work properly once we get near the soltices. The TND 730 NEVER had this problem with the auto brightness and would switch brightness at the right time no matter where or what day of year (seemed to know proper sunrise and sunset times, where the Tablet does not). 2) The topological map that displays on screen when set to auto-zoom is far too bright in night mode. Needs to be toned down a bit. 3) The brightness settings need a bit adjustment as daytime is a bit too dark and nighttime is a little too bright still (Yes even taking into account the brightness settings for the tablet itself). 4) The magnetic mount works most of the time, but hit a good pothole on the interstate doing 60 to 65 and it will pop off the mount (may need to Jerry rig something to help keep that from happening).

Otherwise, everything else is OK (routing is OK, and it does a much better job of staying connected to my mobile hotspot).

    thanks!

This just happens with the 720 unit and for some reason not all 720's. The Dock does not assign drive letters when you mount a device. This is the computer.

Ports on a computer are not assigned drive letters till a device is attached, then a drive letter is assigned by the computer. This drive letter stays with that port till you either rename that port or clean the port by deleting it in the registry.

When you connect a device to the computer you basically start a handshaking protocol. As data is transmitted/received both ways from the computer to the TND and back it keeps the handshaking alive. To simply unplug the cable you could stand a chance to interrupt the handshaking protocol and could possibly corrupt the device attached to the Port. This is why it is recommended that you Safety dismount that port from the computer. The computer has programs you can access which usually are in your start icon tray on the right bottom side of your computer. Once you dismount the drive gracefully from the computer the computer stops the data transfer between the computer and the device in question.

Window's does not say anything, but do this on a MAC and it will pop up a window reminding you that you forgot to dismount the drive gracefully.

    Thanks,
    Mark

Since updating my 520, I have found that I can't detour my route. Start in Mauston, WI to Arcadia, WI. Route given I-90 to LaCrosse then up 53 to 93. Tried to detour from I-90 to run up I-94 to exit 105 but detour does not work. Anyone else having issues with detour?
