Well if some one was totally new to intermodal I would say jump on with a company first and learn how to get crap done in the rails, no point in eating a bunch of expenses to learn how things work. I'm not an O/O and never have been but I'm guessing the rates with some of the smaller companies are quite a bit better than they are at either of the big two. Still for an O/O who wants to be home just about every night I think the average for a run up to greenbay is something like 500-600 bucks. Its an easy drive and the tolls on the way aren't too bad. I know as a company driver I was making close to 200 bucks for that drive and I could get that done in 10 hours pretty easily. I was only using 50-60 gallons a day to do it and I wasn't being careful about mileage either.

I own an intermodal company. For me, I prefer to run my business primarily doing intermodal, because:

    1. We never have to touch any freight.

    2. We are never responsible for any damaged freight.

    3. Our work requires we go both ways, so, there isn't a struggle to find a backhaul.

    4. For our local runs, we get paid lots more per mile, and most of the intermodal stuff is fairly close to the port anyhow.

...I could go on and on. I'm happy to answer any questions...

Yeah...I kinda joined the forum, but so busy with work, I forgot and didn't get to log on! I pay my drivers by the run. The local stuff is about .50/mile plus about $20-30 depending on the location. The distant stuff, $.50/mile-ish.

Can I ask how is your company setup, do you lease to a main company like hubgroup and run your trucks/drivers under them?

Where or how do you find intermodal loads? Do you have regular customers or do you use a broker? Do you know any intermodal brokers?
