There's something very attractive about the whole idea. My Dad was into CB when he was a kid. I'd love one! I suppose, for non-truckers, the internet has supplanted that now. Shame in a way.

    I'd recommend NOT going portable.

A few months back, I was traveling down I-80 in PA and kept hearing people talking about this crazy driver they finally got past. Finally, I got on the CB and asked them what the hell they were talking about. No sooner than I got off the mike, I looked in my mirror and saw this guy driving/weaving down the center of the road. It's nice to tell others about the prick drivers too involved on the cell phone to pay attention to the road, too, as I had a Werner driver run me off the interstate just a few days ago. I looked over and he was sure enough texting on his cell phone. I've shut down my truck in Ohio because the eastbound drivers were telling me once you crossed into Indiana, it was a sheet of ice and they shut down I-80 somewhere around I-65 (the 30 degree temperature drop in 10 minutes clued me into the fact they weren't lying).

Was heading up to our Iron Mountain terminal and was kind of in disbelief when I saw a real bear cross the road. Started chatting it up with the driver behind me who had been driving many years and said it was only the second one he's seen. He was also kind enough to show me an easier route to our terminal--one that completely avoided the downtown stoplights and brought me in from the other direction. I still think it's pretty cool that a black bear ran across the road in front of me. :D

But 80% of the time I'm going down the road it's OFF. There's too many drivers just trying to start up a fight. Any big city... and it's off.

at the pilot's (i think) you can get a cobra 29 for 69 bucks right now. hell of a deal. pair that with a 20$ francis 4.5 ft antenna and you have as much as you need to start out with.
