A bad rep ??

I know for the local guys, those running P&D during the day this may an issue, I know my contractor's P&D guys have 7 minutes to drop & hook and set run times but I've never had an issue running line haul at night. Of course, I do not know for sure what their time parameters are either, I haven't asked nor do I care, When I can run, I run. When the weather prevents me from making good time, I don't worry about it in the least, I have too many years invested in this career accident free to care about anyone's "time constraints".
I was on I-94 in Michigan the night of that big wreck last week and to say I took my time would be an understatement. Anything over 40 mph got things sliding and spinning so I did 40 mph or less from US 23 all the way to Kalamazoo. Yes it sucked, but I made it and sadly, many that did not drive for the conditions did not. I have always driven with the mantra of, they would rather have their load a bit late than be cleaning it up out of a ditch or worse, burned up on the side of the road.

 

30 minutes for a drop or a hook on the Freight side. We are NOT contractors and company people, training is more intense and done well. Ground are contractors and while it is supposed to be Safety First always, not everyone does what they are supposed to

 

I've been told that on the Ground side we have 30 minutes to drop and hook a set as well, the P&D guys don't mess with sets but I still don't know why they're only given 7 minutes when it should be half of what line haul gets. At Ground also, there was really NO training. I rode with the former line haul driver we had with my contractor for a week just to learn how to build the sets as I had never done it before, but that was all I got )
Amen to safety supposedly being first. LOL. But that's where it comes down to each individual driver taking responsibility for their own safety and driving accordingly.

 

SlowPoke44magnum,do to work for Freight? Only asking, because at the Tacoma SC, the city drivers pull sets on a regular basis.

To the OP, I know I get a lot of disrespect on the road for being Fedex. Personally I see all types of companies driving stupid. There is no company wide policy as each contractor is different, however they check your record every year and no more than 1 MV in the last year. I personally drive with respect, signal people they are clear and say thanks if I get signalled in. Cant speak for all the other ground guys, and there are a lot of them.

 

Ground and Freight are 2 different companies. Freight side is 30 minutes to hook a set. No ideas about ground

 

When you have as many vehicles on the road with the resulting variety of driver abilities and attitudes, and the high profile FedEx has, everything is examined closely looking for something wrong.
