13 and 18 have the same 1st gear ratio...Am I right on that?
I admittedly am a sick demented Luddite born a decade or so too late but I can't shake wanting two sticks in there. Maybe I'll just look for another 359 or KW that had them already. Geez what an idiot SMH
I saw a 359 today at Frey's Mulch in Kirkwood, PA. It looked lonely.Last edited: Mar 31, 2015

The 18 has a lower low gear. But the same high as a 13.
rank Thanks this. -
When you get good and comfortable on twin sticks, there's nothing to compare to. You get so you can shift them in your sleep, almost. Also, it will be a skill not shared by many drivers anymore. There is a guy on u-tube, I think it's in a pete, who took an 18 speed and put sticks in to shift his range and splitter. Not quite the same as 2 tranny's but it's pretty cool to watch. Just search for 3 stick shifting, or something close to that. If you do decide to look for a twin stick truck, make sure you check out your gear ratios, diff ratios, and tire size to get something you like. A lot of the older trucks were set up with only a single overdrive on the aux box, and fairly high rears, back in the 70's and 80's, for rig moving and the like. Another thing, I did back in the 80's was to put a spicer 8341 auxillary behind the 13 speed in my ford, mostly for the overdrive, but also because I loved shifting that thing. It was a ligher box than the 1241c spicers, which had what was called a power tower on them for running a winch. On them, you picked your desired winching speed with your main, left your aux in neutral, and then had a stick for the power tower to engage the winch. There's my coffee fuelled rant for the day, lol. Oh, one final thing, cetane is right except that I would add that there are 13 speeds with only a single overdrive gear, in which case not the same as an 18 for top end ratio. Just something to keep in mind. Sometimes that extra over is all the difference between a doggy mule and a smooth cruisin highway princess.

An 18 speed will have a lower low than your "deep reduction" 15 speed. For what you do, either a 13 or an 18 will be an upgrade for sure. I'm fixing up an 84 ext hood 359 right now to run, plan on keeping the 3408 and 5&4 trans. The thing with wanting to run a 2 stick is, if you have to ask why, you wouldnt understand.
rank, bubbanbrenda, rollin coal and 2 others Thank this. -
Yeah I think you nailed it there BigCam.

That vid Lowmax is talking about with the three stick 18 speed just annoys the hell out of me. It's just a whole bunch of wasted motion that impresses the guys who don't know any better. Taking the main out of gear to split... REALLY?!? I'd love to throw the idiot in a truck with two sticks and video him making an ### out of himself. The only thing worse than him filming that is the fools who comment about how that's 'old school cool!' SMDH
What is it the kids say?
Cool story, brah!rank, WitchingHour and Oscar the KW Thank this. -
