Hello all. My first post here and I have a heck of a question. I have talked to DMV's, Permitting Companies, D.O.T., IRP, and I have a different answer from everyone, so I figured it would be smart to ask you guys.:biggrin_25523:

We are a small Owner-Operator car hauler. Base state is Colorado. We have one unit. Apportioned tags, our own authority, insurance, Ifta, etc etc.
    Here is the problem.

We are buying a used tractor trailer rig in California. Cash sale. Free and clear CA titles from the previous owner in hand. We intend to apply for new title and register in CO.
Should be simple enough BUT the tractor has expired CA registration and plates. (About two weeks ago but CA has no grace period for that.) The trailer tags are good for about two more weeks.

1: We don't want to renew in CA ($2,000.00) and under the previous owners name.
2: We can't title in CA because we don't have residency there.
3: CA has no type of temporary permits you can get, just a "single trip" that allows you to go unloaded from point A to point B inside the state
4: We could bring the titles to CO and apply for new title and registration here, but CO wants a VIN inspection that MUST be performed IN STATE by a police officer or emissions station in order to do that.
5:permitting companies can get us temps to get us from CA to CO, but NOT with the tractor having an expired plate.
    :biggrin_2554:
    Question?
How on earth do I move this rig from there to here, without paying an arm and a leg?
Loaded or un-loaded. (Loaded would be better of course, but...)
One company says that if we stay unloaded and have titles and bill of sale and insurance in hand, to just drive the thing home and "We should be ok..."

Another says we should have the tractor towed here, and the same for the trailer...

There has got to be a better way.

    Any suggestions?
Thanks in advance all. It's nice to be here.

I do know that anyone who buys a used vehicle in Ca. that has expired registration will have to pay DMV fees when they put the vehicle in their name. And I don't think you can get a temp without paying up the past due fees. Ca. does have quartly truck registration available. You raise a good question. I think I would just run with it and play dumb. You would have to buy a permit at POE if caught. Be sure to have insurance. Check with transport co's to see what they charge, since they have the proper permits etc. What city in Ca. you leaving from ? If running I-80, you get past Sacramento and should be easy thru Nv. but look out for Ut. Down South, you have Az./Ut. POE in St. George if running I-15.

I used to do driveaway for delivering new trucks from the factory to truck dealerships across the nation. We also moved older trucks that were sold party to party - although licensing and registration was all behind the scenes for me. If you're in a pickle and time is money, as it always is, try calling a few drive away companies. I drove for Unimark, but I have a friend that drives for Bennett. There are others... Cold Iron and something with tigers in the name.... I know Unimark is good and Bennett is big. Might be faster to pay transport company to move it under their authority with their plates - even if you have to park the trailer and come back for it. They might be able to answer some questions on how to get it moved without getting spanked by the authorities. It's an awkward situation but there has to be a way. I kinda like the "run and play dumb" idea LOL

    What I would do:

    Take off the plate.

Make a copy of the bill of sale, fold it hamburger style twice, and tape it vertically in the passenger side of the windsheild.

Keep a copy of your insurance on you.

Remove all lettering/stickers from the truck

Buy a trip permit for each state if you can.

Beg for forgiveness if you can't get a trip permit -- and get caught.

Don't stop at scales (act like it is a private vehicle), but do stop at any port of entries to get/show trip permits.

Drive courteously, at night, & go at/under the speed limit.

I went out and picked up a truck that my brother bought in Bakersfield. I just pointed it east and headed home. I went around the scales or made sure they were closed. Same when I brought my truck back from WV to SD. Just drive.

    Awesome info Gentlemen.
I think the common opinion is sort of like a saying I once heard,
"It is easier to ask for forgiveness than for permission."
You guys are some wise cookies.
    Thanks.:biggrin_25514:

I did the same with my truck that I purchased in Vista, CA. A friend and I drove there in my pick up, paid cash-got the title and drove home. No worries.

I had a similar problem buying an antique car in another state and getting it titled in my state. The state it was coming from had only a bill of sale, no title. My state required a title. Multiple calls and visits to local DMV without resolution.

I called my state senator's office. "No problem sir, Mr Citizen Voter, let us find the solution for you." They called back 24 hours later. They gave me a DMV supervisor's name and direct number. "She knows who you are, what you need, and is expecting your call. She'll take care of everything." And she did.
