Funny story....
I had been pulling tanks (96" wide) for a few years and had got used to seeing the trailer tires tracking exactly where my tractor tires had been. If I was 1" off the line with my truck, the trailer would be 1" off the line.
Anyway, the first time I hooked to an end dump, I started on my way home and noticed that the trailer was dogtracking about 3" to the right. If I was an inch from the white line with my tractor tires, the outside trailer tire was on the line. Then I got REALLY confused when I looked in my left mirror and saw the same thing....if I put my tractor tires 1" off the yellow line, the outside trailer tire would cover the line. How in the heck could the trailer be dogtracking to BOTH sides?
That's when I realized the end dumps were 102" wide.
I had just assumed they were also 96" wide, since the carrier is based in Illinois and does quite a bit of its work here....and it was still back when Illinois still had the 96" wide, 73,280 gross, and all those other oddball size & weight restrictions off the "designated" class 1 & 2 highways.
Tape measure confirmed my hypothesis when I got home.
