I will agree that it is the best and most practical way.. I feel it's a little safer as well BUT that's because I am used to driving right foot only for brake/gas... Who am I to say it's not safe the other way when I don't drive like that... I bet you there are millions of people driving like that without incident... I think we need worry more about texting, drivers reading big maps (believe it or not I have seen many trucks with fold out maps out while driving unreal), rubber necking, cutting off and the list goes on.. I think confident left/right footers are the least of our worries..

I had a chick swerve into my lane today texting. It's getting pretty bad. Gotta love the traffic jam a mile or two long to find out it's just a wreck on the other side of a divided highway.

 

I think you should ask him about it, having raced a bit with modern sports cars the new standard is to break with the left foot just as you do in go carts. On the few occasions where I have driven an automated truck I still use my right foot, but I can understand why he might use both feet.

 

This is how my dad has driven for 39 years of driving truck with no accidents. I've also learned this way. Brake pads are cheaper than a clutch.

 

Occasionally I use my left foot to brake while downshifting, mainly because the tractor I am in disengages the Jakes every time you bump the throttle and have to apply the brakes before they come back on. Just makes it smoother.

 

I just grab a handful of the trailer brakes, the trolley lever on the steering column, and leave it engaged or adjust as needed while downshifting.

But, I'm on a power only lease and trailer brakes are free. I guess I'd brake normal if it was wagon. But I did trolley brake when company too, out of convenience.

 

I miss having a Johnny bar that stays where I put it, all these new trucks spring return. Seems the words "not for parking" wasn't strong enough to keep the steering wheel holders from using it that way.

 

Hire the boy already... Why miss out on a potentially good driver?

 

What is the issue if he does not ride the brakes?

My tractor and forklift are set up for left foot braking.

I do use the left foot for braking sometimes when my right knee is hurting.

 

You can just as easily accidentally be on both pedals at the same time with only your right foot. What matters is control. If he isn't riding his brake, and is off the accelerator every time he uses it, then what's the problem?
