Road quality has declined -and legal liability has expanded.

20 years ago truck tires were only rated at 65 mph. Didn't stop me from breaking the digits thrice zone. Tread would start cupping after a while. You overinflate them if your gonna exceed rated speed. Tire technology has greatly improved I must say.

I heard the same news story 2 weeks ago on local station. They interviewed some NoHabla driver who said tires get too hot so you should pull over every 2 hours to let them cool!:biggrin_2552:

Then report goes on to mention how 1/3 of carriers "don't even have speed limiters."

It's some push organized somewhere to raise public support for speed limiters with a non-issue like tires as a reason.

Wonder who started the media blitz, the ATA? The FMSCA?

All depends on the tire itself, not simply 'big rig tires'
Max speed varies on car tires too, and even smaller trailer tires.

When I was younger, my Jeep had off-road tires that were only rated for 60mph when I bought it.
Not that you'd want to go 60mph in them on a highway anyway, sounded like somebody was zippering up a zipper into a megaphone when they were on roads. Felt like I was driving on a sheet of glass after I replaced them with standard tires a year later.

Ever seen an air show act called "Shock Wave". The guy drives a jet powered Peterbilt and has reached speeds well over 300 mph. I spoke to him after the show once, and asked him where he got the tires for it. His answer? "Off the shelf"

    This guy?

Appear to be quite a few of them.

He probably replaces them after every use too and doesn't use retreads. Most of the videos on youtube I've seen all take place at night-time too. Oh, and just because he uses them doesn't make it right.

...though I'd love to be a fly on the wall of a scalehouse if that thing had to go through on the interstate to be weighed.
