Been looking at a truck to pull RV with. I have narrowed it down to 3 trucks. Which is the better choice? I have a front runner but want to see what the experts say:
Truck #1 2006 Volvo 670, Cummins 450isx with ultrashift. Truck has inverter, super singles 50% and is in good condition inside and out, color I want and has 1,100,000 on the clock and asking 19k. The drawback is this dealer has crappy feedback, he answered my questions on phone but said he was going to look and confirm all he had told me but never called me back so just confirms to me the bad feedback and makes me shy away. Truck #2 2007 Volvo 780, Cummins 485isx with ultrashift. Truck has APU, 70% tread looks good in/out, not my preferred color and has 1,200,000 on the clock asking 19,985. I know the APU is added value, the miles are high but seems at the price they are asking that there may be trouble coming that will cost me some dough? (EDIT) This dealer also says trucks were top fleet vehicles with piston/rod inspections within the last year) View attachment 82409
Truck #3 2006 Freightliner Columbia 120, Detroit 60 515 with ultrashift. No inverter, no APU but is immaculate inside and out, color I want with 690k selling for 21,750 and is standing firm on price. Has 10 brand new tires on aluminum wheels and dual 150 tanks. View attachment 82410
I know the Volvos have better interior space/use and maybe better mileage? People complain about the "freightshaker" rattling and not built well. I am leaning toward the Columbia because of its condition and mileage. Your thoughts and opinions would mean a great deal.
Which is the better deal?

Stay away from the Volvo's. They are a throw away truck. 3-4 years their done, worn out.
-
I don't know, Mustang. There's an awful lot of old Volvo's running around out there. Besides, all trucks are not the same. Some are beat at 500K, some run 2,000,000 and still don't need an inframe. Some only see the inside of a shop when it's PM time (we all want one) and some can't stay out of the shop for a month. It's a truck by truck analysis, not logo by logo, that reveals any truths.

We have volvo's many are the 06/07 ones and are falling apart. And the ultra shifts have a lot of electronic control problems. I hate auto trans.

Put the crack pipe down and walk away. My 780 is 15 years old with 1.6 mm without an inframe, I'm betting I can make it to 2mil.Starboyjim Thanks this.

Sounds like you guys are just a bunch of company drivers that beat the snot out of your equipment.dieselfuelonly, Ezrider_48501, FLATBED and 1 other person Thank this.

It really depends on who had it before you and how they took care of the truck.
-
Your a O/O, big difference. The majority of Volvos are company trucks. Even the ones we have that are in the hands of good experienced drivers who actually take care of them, after a few years of bouncing around the country the plastic parts are falling apart. Yeah I know, a tanker beats the hell out of all trucks but the Macks seem to hold up a lot better.
And a 95' Volvo is probably a far better truck than these new ones. -
What's your engine/tranny configuration, Bakerman?
-
Dunno about that....... there are a lot of lumber haulers in Maine doing OK with some old Volvo's
