In Port Newark/Port Elizabeth, the super freighters should not be a concern. Every ship that goes in there goes under the Bayonne bridge. I doubt the larger ships will fit under. That does not change your concern about the delays though.

    Challenger,
I'm with you on this. I run the nj piers everyday and everything you said about them is true. If the wait times were not as bad it actually wouldn't be a bad gig. They just don't want to get us truckers in and out though because they are paid hourly so whats it matter to them. The strike is a good idea but I think there would be too many bottom feeders still working to make it work.

I haven't been in there since 2010 but I imagine the super, red-faced, epically angry screaming French guy still works there LOL!! Mon dieu, he used to get SOO mad and almost crashed his minivan into me one day when he tried to shove the shifter into reverse and put in drive instead... I am not Montrealaise or even Quebecoise and it used to make him even madder when he would stammer in English and I'd reply in French and he'd spit and scream in French and I'd shrug and be like "huh? Say wha'?"

I just can't help but take the piss outta someone like that, he used to make my day. It was the best part of losing a few hours at the Vieux Port!

Ahh, on a more serious note, why do you even do this intermodal stuff if you're not getting the respect and treatment you deserve? You say you make good money doing it, so what is it that you're trying to change exactly?

Can haulers at the container ports in Halifax earn maybe $15 bucks an hour, I know some companies are paying $11.85/hour and finding guys who want to be home to do it... I'd ask them the same question, why even do it for that price? Why not walk away and do something else and maybe rates will improve, or maybe not. I sure don't work for that, I'd be going home to a cardboard box and rating lunch at a soup kitchen.

You could always try organizing with the Teamsters, they ARE going after this right now. Who cares if you sit if you are on the clock at 22 an hour....

I spoke to a dock worker last week in APM terminal. He confirmed that within two years the super freighters will be coming to the ports of NY/NJ holding 20,000 containers per ship. This is why PNCT bought up the property across the street. Also if you noticed APM and PNCT are starting to share containers. They also hired a bunch of new operators in the ports and plan on hiring more (according to the worker) I have this guys personal phone number and am getting a lot of good info from him. He said they are raising the bridge and plan on being done when the Panama Canal is completed.

I stay because the money is good last week took home AFTER expenses $7,100, this week $3,000. It's just the dam wait time. I'm just concerned with the Electronic logs coming into play in two years, then we ALL won't be making any money. I would jump to another gig if I could find something with steady lanes.

Yes there are a lot of bottom feeders there, they would do a run for $1.00, these guys just don't get it. we shouldn't sit more than 2 hours waiting for a box or on line to get in. Mostly all of us are O/O and if they actually sat down and thought about it they can make more money doing a run then sitting 4-8 hours waiting and not getting paid.
